Travelling to LA for soccer game

I am travelling to LA this Friday to watch David Beckham play in LA. The game will be played at The Home Depot Centre. It is in Carson.

Since it is my first time, how far are we from downtown LA?

My son loves the beach. Is Long Beach a good safe beach? I was thinking of getting a hotel on the beach as well. Any recommendations to make my trip smooth will be appreciated.

We were thinking of driving down to San Diego for a day trip - mainly for a scenic drive along the coast. Is this worth doing? Is so, any tips?

My wife grew up in Carson, I'll ask her to give you some tips when she gets home. Oh and sorry I didn't see this earlier.

WIGAL's wifey here!  :) Here is some information I hope you find helpful.

From Carson, downtown LA is about 20 - 30 minutes with no traffic. But who are we kidding, there's always traffic. To get from Carson to downtown LA you're taking the 405 N and following the signs depending on where you want to end up in Downtown LA.

Long Beach isn't all that far from Carson and if you're going to the Home Depot Center it's maybe a 10 - 15 minute drive, depending on how far into Long Beach you're going. I personally haven't been to the beach in Long Beach but the view is always nice!

If you do stay in Long Beach, try to get a hotel near The Pike. It's a pier area near the beach, places to eat and hang out. The downtown area is also nice. Long Beach also has the aquarium if you're up for a trip.

I wouldn't suggest going to San Diego for a day trip. From Carson/Long Beach it's a two hour drive and you aren't seeing any of the coast line when you're driving down. Once you get to San Diego (especially into La Jolla) that's where all the beautiful beaches. If you only have a day, it really isn't worth a 4 hour trip.

If you son loves the beach and you have time, hit up Venice Beach or Santa Monica Pier. Venice Beach is a 'cool' spot to hang out, walk around and meet interesting people. Santa Monica Pier is a boardwalk right on the beach with restaurants, arcades and roller coasters. It's more family friendly and isn't too far from Carson.

I hope I gave you some relevant information. Enjoy my hometown and the greater LA area.

For a truly scenic drive, go north from L.A. The Pacific Coast Highway is beautiful, breathtaking and terrifying all in one.

The ocean in California isn't always warm so there aren't a lot of swimmers (except in wetsuits). There are some "interesting" beaches in L.A. if you are into people watching - Manhattan Beach, Venice Beach - that sort of thing. Can't vouch for Long Beach.
