The NHL and Sportvision announced on Saturday a partnership to revolutionize the collection of data in the game of hockey.

With tracking chips implanted into pucks and the back of players' jerseys, Sportvision will be able to gather previously unattainable data from all over the ice by using a series of infrared cameras placed around the arena that will read the chips. The location of each player and the puck, as well as the speed of the puck and each player, are among the data that can be collected at a rate of 30 times per second.

If it works, it will be revolutionary.

Sounds cool. More data can't hurt and it could also have good entertainment value for fans.

I especially look forward to tracking the speed (or lack thereof) of players returning to the bench after their shift.

It's going to be great seeing all the people who vigorously mocked corsi and advanced stats as we know it fall head over heels for all the information this will provide just because it's backed by the NHL and not nerds in their basements.

Also read one article where it said that broadcasters are intrigued by the possibility that this tracking could explain what lines are matched up against other lines. Yeah, you don't need chips for that, NaturalStatTrick could provide that info for free.

Nice to see them legitimized in some way, but I definitely won't be adding that link to my bookmarks any time soon.

Looks like they've rebranded Corsi and Fenwick to SAT (Shot Attempts) and USAT (Unblocked Shot Attempts), which shortens the learning curve by one step.

I'm excited to see the SportVision data combined with the GoPro camera angles.

No way to filter time on ice makes it almost useless.

PHASE TWO (April 2015)
The two primary innovations are stat visualizations and stat search filtering.
(So they can finally catch up with behindthenet, war-on-ice, etc.)

PHASE THREE (Fall 2015)
By the start of the 2015-16 season this fall, the NHL expects to have further innovations for its stat visualization charts; and, if all goes well with the technology?s rollout, the first introductions of player-tracking stats to NHL.com.

PHASE FOUR (2016)
The digitizing of every NHL box score going back to 1917.

We'll eventually be able to replay/recreate each game from just about any POV (puck, goalie, etc.). I'm hoping they put together some online tools that'll let people pivot the stats, a la the SAS demo from earlier this year. Coupled with the GoPro data, we'll be able to not only visualize the data in macro analysis, but watch a discrete event at multiple angles.

Tidbits of trivia, like fastest skater and hardest shot, will no longer be relegated to All Star festivities as these will be statistically measurable throughout the course of a season league-wide. The Department of Player Safety will have an unprecedented amount of objective information to work with when meting out disciplinary action. I don't think it will replace referees entirely, but it'll make video replay a breeze, leading to quicker, more accurate decisions.
