They're way over the cap
Yup. They will have to move a player or two. An expansion team in Cap hell. Pacioretty's deal looks horrible. 7 mill for 22 goals/40 pts last year in 66 games.

Clarkson going on LTIR (or being dumped somewhere) plus trading Colin Miller gives them a fair bit of wiggle room. Pacioretty didn't have the most consistent season but him, Stone, and Stastny had a massive playoffs. I'd be hesitant to break that line up before seeing them in action for awhile longer.

edit: just realized that capfriendly hasn't added Karlsson's contract yet, I guess it's not officially official. So with his contract factored in yeah that's a lot tougher. Still, I'd focus on Miller plus say Eakin first as cap causalities. I'd put Ryan Reaves in that conversation too personally but I doubt they move him.

So how much money did he cost himself by not signing long-term after last year? 10 million? 15?

Do you think a long-term deal last year was really on the table? I doubt Vegas would have had any interest in that, unless it came with a steep discount for a player coming off a PPG season (like basically what he just signed for).

I thought I remembered rumours to the effect that it was but obviously that could be wrong. I just think that even a long term deal at 7-8 million per would have been seen as a pretty good deal if they thought Karlsson was even remotely the sort of player he looked like last year. Obviously his numbers would come down a bit but if he'd been, say, a 30 goal/65 point guy I think that would still look like a reasonable deal.
