Zajac Signs

If he can perform like he did in 08/09 and 09/10, then it's a perfectly reasonable contract. If not, well, yeah, it's an overpayment for the first few seasons, at least. Who knows where things will be on the back half of that deal?

This makes me scared of the ungodly # Lupul and Kessel are going to draw.

Lupul will come to a head faster than we realize.  With the trade deadline in April, I say Nonis has to either sign him or move him before then.

Zajac vs. Grabbo:  who is the better player, or are they roughly even?

Zajac scored 62 and then 67 a couple of years ago with 20 and 25 goals.  Grabbo had 58 and then 51 with 29 and 23 goals the couple of years.  Grabbo scores a little more and dishes less.  On the other hand, Grabbo is easily the best player on his line whereas Zajac played with Parise who was scoring 78 points.  Grabbo's pretty great on defense.  I suppose Zajac is too?

Roughly even?  Toronto got the better contract by virtue of it being so much shorter?

I'm wondering if we should (and could -- may not have any takers) sell Lupul high and try for a younger player with first-line potential?  It is always tough pulling the trigger on that kind of deal because you are giving a guy who's looking pretty good right in front of your eyes.  Though Lupul is quite a horror show in the defensive end of the rink.

I'd like to avoid a Darcy Tucker/Bryan Mccabe contract-then-flop situation.

I wonder after Lupul showed such chemistry with Kessel if Carlyle and Lupul will get along.  Lupul's trade value is probably at the highest of his career (similar to McCabe's that fateful contract season) and might be able to fetch a top player.  If JVR shows chemistry with Kessel I would look to move Lupul.

I  agree 100%

I think Zajac's the better player, probably more well rounded and better defensively. But, I haven't seen him play as much as Grabovski.

I just spent some time comparing their stats on NHL.com. Holy man they're close in just about everything. Biggest difference being that Grabovski is essentially never used on the PK.

I don't know, Zajac's and Grabovksi's contracts seem to be in line with the going rate for 60-point centres, although I still think each is overpaid by half a million.

I look at a player like Weiss who is up next summer -- a similar player in that he has put up 60 points, is sound defensively and is playing a 1st line role when he is more suited for the 2nd line.  I don't think many would believe he is worth $5.5 to $6M.
