2025 Offseason Thread: Spring Cleaning

I'm glad Bennet is off the table, if he really is. I know his playoff resume, but signing him as a UFA would surely backfire on the Leafs.
100% agree. 162 career goals in almost 700 games does not say 9-10 mil. Been great the last two playoffs, but I believe that's mostly due to the style Maurice has the team playing.

Interesting that these players that are apparently leaving...because they are going to make so many more milions of dollars
elsewhere.

It was also mentioned somewhere that if McDavid wait until his contract expires he will have "access" to the even higher Cap
than if he signs now. Not sure about that as the contract would not start until the higher Cap limit anyway?

He can't sign for 20% of the 26/27 cap because the 26/27 ceiling has not been officially set, so, if he signs now, he's constrained by the current limits. Once the cap for 26/27 is official, then he can max out using that.

Spezza walked into the front office right after he was done playing after a few years of vet minimum deals. I didn't hear anyone cry malfeasance.
I can't see it being an issue. No way for the league to be asking questions. If it was him signing for peanuts ya I could see eyes raised but i'm talking like if JT would be able to sign for let's say 3 years at 6-7 million he signs for 3 years at 4-5 million saving the Leafs 2-3 million each year then give a cushy job as whatever. Or you even add another year in management to make up any money loss. There are ways that can play with numbers and it wouldn't even look fishy. Take that 3 million savings and put it towards some help.

If there wasn’t a chance the league would look into it, we would have seen this scenario play out a lot more frequently than it has.

Completely agree about Marner's representatives screwing this up for him.

Also, Nylander is the only guys who signed for 8-years.

I'm curious how Marner does next season. How much was he propped up or insulated by paying on one of the best offensive teams in the NHL the last 8 years? How much of a play driver is he?
I'd be shocked if he doesn't hit 95+ points again. He's not propped up or insulated. He's a phenomenal player who will put up massive points anywhere he plays.

He's also not going to go play for a garbage team. Even if he say...goes to San Jose. He goes and plays with Celebrini....Chicago? Bedard...Anheim has players. So wherever he goes, he's going to play with guys who can put the puck in the net.

The knock on Marner is not his ability to put up massive points. It's only his ability to generate offense in stifling defensive situations in the postseason. You have like 5-7 of those games a year in the regular season.

Me waiting for the Pierre Engvall buyout so we can sign him to make Kampf useful again, with Kapanen on the RW.

On one hand it really is all about money. Man his agent really is going to screw his reputation in perpetuity.

I think people should get comfortable with the fact that the agent only does whatever he does at the behest of the client. Ferris does some obviously agenty stuff, but it’s not remotely like this for any of his other clients.
