2011 Toronto Raptors/NBA/Labour Negotiations Spectacular

Also Stern released quite possibly the worst explanation for the trade block in the history of everything.  It had to do with Paul being more valuable in New Orleans (a valid point).  He then proceeded to say that he would not be giving any basketball related reasons for why he vetoed the trade.  His entire justification for the veto yesterday was "basketball related reasons".  Good job Stern.

So he'll coast through the season, and leave as a free agent while New Orleans gets nothing... unless Stern forces him to stay.

Paul showed up for Camp, Odom didn't, the Magic waived Arenas, Chandler said he'll sign with the Knicks.

Hey, you know, not everyone in the media thinks the NBA acted like a bunch of morons here. Here's a passionate defense of the league's decision from...uh, NBA.com

What he finished with was true though.  If you had an owner in place (whether it was a guy who in the long-run moved the team elsewhere or not) none of this happens because that owner can consent to the trade.  Instead the NBA stopped fielding offers during the lockout because if they sold the franchise for a reasonable amount it would have looked really bad on them when they are crying poor about how little their franchises are valued as.

.... Derek Fisher.... the players union president thinks the NBA overstepped the intent of its new collective bargaining agreement when David Stern blocked the deal.

?I still disagree with ? Commissioner Stern and the owners? ability to hold up a trade,? said Fisher, who started every game for the past four years at point guard. ?In a sense, it flies in the face of all the negotiations we had on the collective bargaining agreement.?

What's the skinny on this Rasual Butler fella? - Seems we're signing him.  More "meh?" Seems I know less and less about the players in the NBA each year.

It's going to look like that regardless with the Raptors this year.  I think they are just bringing in a bunch of guys who work hard on 1-2 years deals to fill out the roster in the hopes that they can add a big asset next year to combine with Val coming over.

Sure, but anyone who looked closely at the conditions of the league would have seen that anyway. The Warriors sold for what, 450 million? For a mid-sized team in a league with a supposedly terrible CBA?

Isn't the plan for next year is to add Val + excellent draft pick + FAs with oodles of cap space? Aren't these signings going to be slightly detrimental to that?

The Austin Rivers watch begins!

Every last one of these signings has added a guy who brings the right attitude/works hard but they really suck.  It means the Raptors won't get blown out in every game but will lost most of them.  So they will sill get a high pick, will still have the cap space but can try to minimize how much the fans are going to hate the team for tanking.

You think fans would hate 'em for tanking when only 10 months from now they could actually be kinda good? I wouldn't but that's just me.

The die-hards, no, they'll get it.  But you never need to worry about your die-hard fans, they are the ones who stick by the team when they suck and while they might go away for stretches if the team turns them off, they will come back.

But you need to be careful to not lose touch with the casual fan who doesn't care about the long-term aspects of the franchise.

There's really no scenario by which they're "kinda good" ten months from now. Nobody in the draft is the sort who's going to be a huge impact guy right away, Val is likely going to be a project and free agency, for the Raptors, has yet to produce much in the way of results.

A lot of the frustration with the team is that there's so little on it to be excited about but they still went with drafting the long-term project.

Raps apparently bringing in Anthony Carter as well.

So that's Butler, Gray, Magloire, Forbes and Carter.

It's going to be a long season.

The 2011-2012 Toronto Raptors - They're a Basketball Team!

LaMarcus Aldridge was diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia (WpW Syndrome) and had an RF Ablation procedure.  He should be fine, but his situation could be quite similar to Gustavsson's where there could be a series of electrical loops that are causing the heart problem and he might have this pop up again in the future.

Man, Colangelo's medical scouting that year was gangbusters.
