Busta Reims said:TSNBobMcKenzie: First two rounds of playoffs are strictly within conference -- 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3, winners face each other. Just like old Divisional format.
TSNBobMcKenzie: Four conference winners are seeded on total points, 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3, so an all-East or all-West final is possible.
TSNBobMcKenzie: Teams play home-and-home (2 games) vs all teams outside of own conference with balance of games played against own conference rivals.

Pros: Intense playoff rivalries that happen year after year with great regularity. Think NYR-NYI, NYR-NJD, NYI-WSH or CGY-EDM, BOS-MTL etc.

Cons: 5th place team in a "stronger" conference misses playoffs and 4th place team in a "weaker" conference makes it.

Cons: Two of the NHL's elite teams, maybe the top two overall, could conceivably meet in the 2nd round of the playoffs.
