2012 Olympics

Hooray for the Canadian women's soccer team on making good on their promise to get on a podium with a medal! Diana Matheson's goal in the 92nd minute won the bronze, and a place in Canadian Olympic soccer history.

After that emotional, controversial loss to the U.S. in the semi-final, the Canadian girls rebounded with a determined effort even though France dominated offensively.  Still, we in Canada can be proud of our soccer women who held their heads high, so to speak, and got the job done even if the decisive goal came at the last minute.

Congratulations!  "Oh Canada!"....

In more Canadian Olympic news, Adam Van Koeverden won the silver in the men's 1000m kayak, while Mark Oldershaw took the bronze in the men's C 1800m kayak.

In Women's 55kg Freestyle Wrestling, Tonya Lynn Verbeek won the silver, while Carole Huynh won the bronze in the Women's 45kg Freestyle Wrestling.

In Track & Field, Derek Drouin wins silver in the men's long jump.

So far, Canada has captured 16 medals -- 1G, 5S, 10B.

Wow, France dominates Canada all match but Canada scores the only goal in the 92nd minute to win the bronze.

Justice.

Canada wins the bronze, and the U.S. wins the gold to go along with the silver platter they were served the semifinal game on.

Call it the Jamaican sweep...

Bolt wins 200m gold.  Fellow compatriot Blake wins silver.  Double for each. Coming in third was another Jamaican Warren Weir.

Usain Bolt now becomes the only Olympic athlete to win gold in both the 100 & 200m, and Bolt also becomes the first to defend both titles.

The Jamaican men's 4x100m relay team (with Bolt & Blake) will try to win gold.  Should that achievement be merited, Bolt & Jamaica will make Olympic history with back-to-back-back (gold medal) victories.  Will it happen?

The Canadian men's 4x100m relay team also has a chance.  They came in third at a European meet prior to these Games.

Canada's Mark de Jonge earned the country it's 18th medal of the Games, as he won bronze in the men's K-1 200m kayak event.

Heartbreak for Canada in the 4x100 after finishing the race in third place, they were disqualified for a lane violation.

Talk about harsh, he didn't even step over the line, just on it for a stride or two.

But that's the rule I suppose, what a shame.

Team USA wins gold in men's basketball  against a very determined Team Spain, by a score of 107-100.  Foul trouble late in the match did Spain in, particularly by the Gasol brothers.  Still, it proved no easy task for the Americans to beat Spain.  The U.S. acknowledged this and so did the rest of the basketball world.

Good job, Espa?a!  Congrats, "Dream Team" USA!

If these closing ceremonies don't end with Always Look on the Bright Side of Life I will be tragically disappointed.

So, the theme to the Closing Ceremonies is "British people you may have heard of?"

Britain: We made some great music anywhere from 15 to 45 years ago.

And, we'll bring in someone new to ruin our classics.

Seriously, Jesse J (whoever she is) butchered We Will Rock You.

I don't have a strong opinion on that as A) I don't like the song much anyway and B) I think the lead vocals on that song aren't really the point anyway but in total I'd almost go the other way. I get the nostalgia factor and everything but for the most part I thought the opening and closing ceremonies highlighted the sort of unfortunate ways the voice can age. I thought, for instance, that the Arctic Monkeys sounded way better doing a Beatles classic than McCartney did.
