Jordan Staal broke his right leg last night during a collision into the boards with Josh Gorges:

Tough loss, although definitely helps them in the McDavid race.

#NYR say Derek Stepan has a fractured fibula. No timetable

Crazy injury, too.

NYP_Brooksie: Stepan helped off ice after going down, clutching left leg/knee, during #NYR conditioning test. No contact, simply fell to ice...

It just kind of broke under him.

I don't ever recall as many injuries during training camp/pre-season as there have been in the last couple of years.

I wonder how much that has to do with an extremely short training camp.  In years past it lasted at least a week before being thrown into game action, whereas now it seems like you have a weekend before getting right at it.

Training is different nowadays with players training right through the summer, but I read somewhere yesterday that that may be even having an adverse effect.

I really hope the Leafs head into the season unscathed.  The last thing needed is someone going down with a groin injury or something.

Elliotte Freidman was the one who wrote about summer training being a possible cause for concern in his latest 30 thoughts (which everybody should have already read):

That's it...thanks.

These guys aren't willing/able to take any down time.  You constantly hear them saying they'll take a week or two after the season to relax then get right into it.  I understand the game has evolved from prior years, but how are their bodies supposed to rest, relax and heal.  It's crazy.

Kessel may be on to something when he says the game is the furthest thing from his mind during the summer.

AnsarKhanMLive: Pavel Datsyuk has a second-degree shoulder separation and is out 4-5 weeks, Ken Holland said.

The butterfly effect of Gorges refusing a trade to Toronto is gaining steam (wind?).  :o  I feel terrible for Staal, what a way to start your year.

Had surgery and will be out 3-4 months.

Man, how great would it be if because of this injury Carolina finishes last instead of Buffalo and the Canes get the 1st overall pick? Josh Gorges refusing a trade to Toronto would have then cost Buffalo McDavid! The only thing better than that would be if Gorges scores the game winning goal in the final game of the season to put the Sabres 3rd overall and they miss Eichel too.

And that win somehow eliminates the Habs from the playoffs, making the cycle complete.

@RealKyper

Injury woes continue in #CBJ. Told  Dubinsky is out indefinitely and not available to start #NHL season. Possible long term situation

And this is from Friedman's 30 thoughts today:

5. During a season-preview conversation with one player, he asked: ?Have you heard that Nathan Horton will never play again? That?s the rumour.? Well, no I hadn?t. The Blue Jackets say they don?t believe it?s that bad, Horton is committed to his rehab and they?ll see how it goes. Whatever the case, it appears his back injury is worse than we realized. (That player is not quoted elsewhere in this blog.)

Especially considering he was viewed as fairly weak at the combine.

That's a substantial chunk of strength and conditioning time out of his year.
