2015-2016 NHL Thread

Pittsburgh is on a tear. They won their 6th in a row last night, against the Caps, and moved into 2nd in the Metropolitan division. Crosby's 3rd in league scoring, and has a chance to catch Benn for 2nd (especially if he keeps up his recent pace - 9 pts in 5GP, 20 pts in the last 12)

I mean...I'm happy that it looks like the Leafs are going to get a 1st this year and all, but do they really need to make it a 25th instead of a 16th?

It's like they don't even care about our draft pick. What nerve!

Kessel's playing like he does...

Since December 1st:

Kane - 55 points in 49 games (1.12 PPG)
Crosby - 61 points in 48 games (1.27 PPG)

Since January 1st:

Kane - 36 points in 34 games (1.06 PPG)
Crosby - 49 points in 35 games (1.40 PPG)

Since February 1st:

Kane - 19 points in 20 games (0.95 PPG)
Crosby - 35 points in 24 games (1.46 PPG)

Since March 1st:

Kane - 7 points in 9 games (0.78 PPG)
Crosby - 17 points in 11 games (1.55 PPG)

Typically hockey people love giving people extra credit for scoring late in the season as opposed to early in the season. The story could easily be the Kane scored a bunch of points in November while Crosby's the one who dominated in "crunch time". He also plays the more important position, and is leading the worse team/organization into the playoffs. I can definitely see this being a situation where we have different winners for the Lester and the Hart.

On the other though, would anyone in the world choose Patrick Kane over Crosby?

Long-term? No. This season? Yeah.

I don't know if I buy that. Between Crosby's more complete game and leadership for lack of a better word?

So...Melnyk's gone off the deep end before the Sens season has ended. Some gems from the presser to discuss the Sens 25th anniversary:

- Everyone is "under the microscope."
- Sens should be top 5/6 team in the league with their roster
- $68M US (bottom 10 in terms of salary cap spent) is more than enough to ice a winner
- Decision to start Matt O'Connor (who?) for the home opener was "Stupid"

This is going to play out well.

*looks at their roster*

He's just trolling now, right? Like, he's the real life version of MadFerret.

His point was about the sens payroll is also interesting since just a few days ago Sportsnet had a piece looking at payroll and playoff success: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/cost-icing-winning-team-nhl/

...

The Senators have cornered this market under Eugene Melnyk?s watch in recent years. His infamous ?cost-per-point? remarks are not only amusing to look back at, but they?re also rather telling. Because of how the Sens pinch pennies, they are wasting the prime years of their foundational centerpieces, who aren?t getting enough support.

...

Put it this way: spending money doesn?t ensure you?ll win, but not spending money essentially thwarts your chances of legitimately competing. It?s as if there?s a requisite cover charge that you need to pay to enter the VIP area of a club and that?s where it?ll ultimately be decided who gets to go home with the Stanley Cup.

It's also interesting because there's a lot of talk that they'll lose one of their better players, Mike Hoffman, solely because they won't pay him what he's worth.

Well, thanks for not pinching pennies on Dion, Ottawa.

Amazingly, that was one of the moves that Melnyk thought was prudent and called out as a positive for the season.

Edit: Basically, he's living in bizarro world.

Theory: MadFerret = Melnyk?

I'm pretty sure they actually save a bunch of salary over this season and next because of the deal. Obviously, after that is a problem though.

In the short run, he did get out of $9-ish M for next season (to replace it with $7.5M). Phaneuf's salary decreases towards the end of his contract too, so he gets a veteran blueliner for diminishing actual dollars, which is of some value to a budget team, plus a bunch of cheap forward options to replace three salary anchors from the roster fringe.

I'd say both teams were happy with what they got (and what they got out of).

What is also important and a key component (re: payroll/salary/competitveness):

(From the article):
The most important factor in icing a competitive team is still a capable front office that spends its money judiciously and wisely allocates its resources.

Maybe. Hard to imagine that some short term success wasn't ideally what Ottawa wanted out of it though.

Thanks for the reminder; I believe you are correct. Lou pretty much said the same thing the day after the trade, about now being Phaneuf's time, and not the Leafs' so the trade made sense.

Melnyk was pretty keyed to make some playoff bank, and that frustration sounds like a big part of this tirade.

?The status quo will just get us there again next year. And this team cannot survive not making the playoffs. You can't just throw money at these things. We need to do it a different way and I think we are.?

Wonder if the low Canadian dollar is hitting Melnyk hard?
