And I'm sure if you asked them they'd say they'd prefer almost anything but doing that. There's just a practical reality of what signing Hamilton would mean for them. They'd have virtually no cap space to make any changes to a team that had a pretty mediocre season last year. Whether it's trading Hamilton or Krejci or Chara...someone who would make that kind of money has to go and all of those would be "blowing it up" to some extent.
At least with trading Hamilton you figure they could get some good, young controllable assets back.
