Healy just wants something to rag on the Leafs for for the next 10 years in between his fawning over Carey Price's haircut. The Leafs will not pick Crouse.

He's such a moron.  On Kessel's wrap around he said he wouldn't even call that a scoring chance because he was behind the net, and how Price was looking the wrong way.  If Gallagher had scored that goal he would have prattled on for 10 minutes about what a special player he was, and that the "little big man" was so quick that the goalie didn't stand a chance.

McDavid has 15 points in 3 games against the Knights.  It's hard to watch as a Knights fan but this guy is insane.  It doesn't help that Domi's playing hurt and Marner and their starting goaltender are still out.  Pretty much makes these horrendously one-sided games.

What were the percentages under the old system? If I remember correctly, the lowest team to ever win the lottery was 7th last, right?

Those odds are insane.  Someone here posted a lottery simulator recently and it's absurd how many times it gets won by a team that has no business getting the first overall pick.  I don't know what the NHL was thinking.  If they were trying to dissuade teams from tanking, it clearly didn't work.  Instead it's quite possible it will end up rewarding a team that's quite frankly undeserving.

If I was the type who subscribed to conspiricy theories, I'd say some East Coast team, likely the Flyers or Devils, will win the thing.  Can you imagine McDavid being wasted on the Devils' fanbase?  We can all look forward to him receiving his Hart trophy in a parking lot ceremony.

But isn't that the crux of the matter? Why is the crappiest team in the league (and generally intentionally so) more deserving of this reward than a team like Dallas, LA, or Boston who tried to get into the playoffs?

I think the general idea of the draft is to distribute talent so that bad teams don't perpetually stay bad.

Pittsburgh and Chicago were both in pretty awful shape before they got Crosby & Malkin/Toews & Kane. Would there still be hockey in those markets if the draft order were reversed before those drafts happened?

I was expecting Rogers to have a 12 hour pre-draft lottery show.

If Chicago hadn't drafted Kane and Toews they'd still be building around a core that included Keith, Seabrook, Byfuglien, Ladd, Sharp, Hjalmarsson, Crawford, etc.

Seems to me it's getting smart that saved them.

Fair point. But even just in terms of marketing and getting fans who had pretty much quit on the team following the Wirtz days back into the arena two top-3 picks like Toews and Kane would have had a significantly larger impact than all those guys combined.

The thing with those 2 as the core is that Kane seemed to be a brat and much worse attitude than Kessel.  That is why I have hope for Kessel still.

Guys like Ladd were traded for after Toews/Kane were drafted so it's hard to really comment on moves not made in a vacuum - does one happen without the other?  Then you get basically lucky with Sharp, trading for him at 24 with okay AHL numbers and seeing him best those numbers in the NHL.  It also took Rocky Wirtz taking over from his father after his father's death to significantly alter the team's philosophy from top to bottom.

But I don't think they're anywhere near the success they are right now without those 2 picks.
