I was toying with this earlier in the day
The Leafs could actually roll some fun (and at least serviceable) lines along national... lines:
JvR - Matthews - Bracco
Leivo - Kadri - Marner - So, I want this now.
Timashov - Nylander - Johnsson
Leipsic - Brooks - Griffith
Hyman - Bozak - Brown
Less fun or incomplete:

And really given that this years crop of college free agents doesn't seem all that great, it's possible none of them get contracts that start immediately to burn off a year of their ELCs. So we can still sign them to contracts that begin next season and have them also go the try-out route to get them with the Marlies this season.
The player that the article somewhat laments we couldn't sign, Zach MacEwen, didn't sign a contract for the 2016-2017 season. His deal starts next year. So our contract situation wasn't what prevented us from getting him.

The article laying out the possible options did help assuage my initial contract limit concerns that underlay my hot take rage that we did not trade Polak at the deadline.
KHL/Euro signings might still be a thing to get into, but I think we can manage. 11+1 contracts coming off automatically via UFA + Expansion. 9 RFAs where only maybe 6-7 should be qualified. I think we're onboarding 5-6 juniors.

As much as the team likes Holl, he's ceiling is sub-NHL so you might as well just give him an AHL contract. One of the two goalies has to go as neither is much of an option to make room for Kaskisuo.
Of the UFAs to re-up: Andrew Campbell, but preferably on an AHL contract, a la Clune; and since Babcock needs his security blanket, Brian Boyle to 2ishM for 1 or 2 years (please no more than that, ugh $5M+ 4th line).

So, last season, Kadri was tops on the team with 45 points. Tonight, Bozak became the 6th Leaf forward to hit that mark.

This is far better than the Carlisle/Horechuck season when there seemed to be no hope. Phaneuf and Clarksons contracts like anchor weights on the Titanic. Thank god for Shanahan, Babcock, Hunter, Lou and Dubas. What a turn around!

Kind of an interesting point from Vice's Biscuits podcast from Sean McIndoe re: the apparently aborted larger trade between Tampa and Toronto that would have seen Filppula be part of the Boyle deal as a salary dump on Tampa's part.
Basically the idea put forth is that the reason Filppula wasn't willing to waive his NTC to Toronto is because of the Leafs reputation/willingness to bury salary dump guys like Michalek/Fehr/Laich in the minors and Filppula, who's not ancient and has been reasonably productive this year, I guess thought he had a more likely chance of being given a fair shot at ice time with the Flyers.
Anyways, on the heels of Michalek saying he regretted waiving his NTC to come here I think it's fair to say that the whole Lamoriello Island stuff is maybe spreading throughout the league and it is going to limit the Leafs ability to get really creative in terms of adding assets by taking on salary. Now, as pointed out on the podcast, overpaid guys with NTC's not wanting to come here isn't a terrible loss but it is something to consider going forward.

I'm pretty sure Filpulla has a no Movement clause. Ie he wouldn't have had to worry about getting buried by the Leafs.

There was simply nothing after years of JFJ desolation and Mats retired. And the peak of it was a first-round exit in a shortened 2013 season and a few years of being in the mushy middle.
To be fair neither GMs really had the mandate/vision to do what Brendan Shanahan did: 'Ok, that's it. This is a league where only elite players come through the draft. We're taking it to the bone and doing what Chicago did. Y'all stick around for a bit and Toronto will once again be in their rightful place in the league. And here's Babcock and Lou to see I'm serious.' Frankly neither of those guys would even be here unless they believed Shanny, both have said it publicly.

Only becomes voided if traded before your UFA years or you actually waive your clause. I believe He didn't waive to go to Philly- they were just on his list. In the case of the Leafs, they could have refused to sign the addendum. If he was worried about it he could have said I'll only consent if you promise the addendum.

But even still, I think it misses the point. The Leafs could, if they chose, keep Filppula up and simply never play him. Or we could spend all of next year hearing about Filppula's mysterious injury keeping him out of play.
I think the point still is that once you gain a reputation for maybe being willing to take vets and treat them in a way they think is fair then a reputation can spread and some players in similar situations will be wary about joining your team.
Like I said, it's not a huge loss or anything but it's worth noting.

I specifically think that they have fudged the facts around Lupul's injury, and that other veterans don't like it. Between i) Kadri's assertion that Lupul looked good to go at the beginning of the year and ii) the almost complete silence from a normally gregarious and marketable Lupul, something is up.
