It's not a huge deal now as there is still 10+ coming off the books from Horton/Lupul to get under cap compliance even with Brown signed but it's a nice reminder that the Leafs still need to be smart in managing the cap and signing 4th liners to 2+ million dollar contracts when they can't score or kill penalties is bad asset management.

I had this thought when he was mentioned as someone the Ducks were interested in for a possible Vatanen trade but doesn't it actually make a lot of sense to move Brown? He's got some real value but of the team's RW depth chart he also seems like the guy who you could replace with Kapanen without really losing anything.

Especially if you look ahead a bit. I don't think it'll make much sense to have him on the roster in 2 or 3 years.

Even if Brown's on the back end of a 4 x $3.25m contract, he'll look overpriced with the re-signed core of Matthews, Marner, Nylander (and maybe Gardiner?) eating up a lot of cap space, the next round of ELCs expiring, and at least some of the young, cheap replacement options (Korshkov, Brooks, Bracco, Grundstrom, Timashov, etc.) ready to graduate. He seems like the prime candidate to get Versteeged/Bollanded at that point.

So, if they can replace him internally now and get something better than a few second round picks for him, why not?

Which might seem strange at first blush, prioritizing the AHL deals before Brown, but most people are expecting that they already have a deal in principle and are waiting for that move (or two) that clears space.

Others have posited that this makes Brown and the Leafs very susceptible to an offersheet. a) lifelong Leafs fan Connor Brown would have to sign that sheet willingly; b) it'd have to be more than what the Leafs are offering (probably in the 3-4 range); c) NHL GMs are more worried about being buddies than competing.

Others have posited that this makes Brown and the Leafs very susceptible to an offersheet. a) lifelong Leafs fan Connor Brown would have to sign that sheet willingly; b) it'd have to be more than what the Leafs are offering (probably in the 3-4 range); c) NHL GMs are more worried about being buddies than competing.

Also, if they're willing to go as high as $4M+ (which is probably what it would take for an offer sheet to get signed and for the Leafs to consider not matching), that team would have to be willing to give up a 1st and a 3rd pick for Brown, which seems unlikely (which is another reason why offer sheets are so rare - the compensation is a significant deterrent).

Which, if we're being honest, makes way more sense than the alternative. The idea that you'd have a mechanism like LTIR but not let teams use it year round never really added up.

I think the confusion stems from the wording of the examples used in the CBA 50.10(d)(iv) (pdf page 310-312, document page 290-292), where there are illustrations of "Prior to Opening Day" LTIR usage, but they're always prefaced with "on the last day of Training Camp" and activating Bona Fide LTIR exceptions on Opening Day.


Basically offseason just uses aggregate cap hits vs in-season pro-rated daily cap hits for the calculations?

How long has LTIR been a thing? It's honestly amazing that it's taken this long for this to come out. And that this was something that actual NHL executives didn't know about.

Would have prefered him to McBackup for sure.  Sounds like the third year he wanted was the sticking point- which makes sense, that's when Matthews/Marner/Gardiner need new contracts and 2.4 million on your backup might be too much.

Yeah. I also thought Condon would make for a pretty good backup for the Leafs, until I saw the contract he go. $2.4M per is basically double what I was imagining him signing for.
