2016 Confirmed Free Agent Thread

I think at his age, with a cup under his belt, his environment is probably more likely to be a big factor even if you want to argue that Edmonton is somewhat closer to competitive.

You might be right. I don't know why any player would want to sign with a team as completely hopeless as the Canucks are right now even if it's their hometown but then I of course thought of Clarkson.

Some people here have gotten very optimistic about the Oilers' ability to lure big time free agents to Edmonton.

Craig Button suggested it on the radio this morning with solid assurance.  Said the link between Chiarelli and Lucic is quite strong that it's all but a formality.  We'll see.  I would never have thought of Lucic to Edmonton.  My guess would have been Vancouver otherwise.

For some reason I think Carolina is going to be a darkhorse player in the UFA market.

Same here, though I didn't put any of my free agents there. :) I was tempted to put Stamkos to NYI, because I think that would be hilarious for some reason. Tavares and Stamkos would make a somewhat decent 1-2.

Stamkos - TOR/DET
Lucic      - VAN/EDM
Okposo  -  MTL/L.A.
Erikson  - VAN/ANA
Backes  -  DAL/ARI
Boedker - WPG/DET
Ladd      - DAL/STL
Nielson  - NYI/BUF
Demers  - DAL/NJ
Campbell - L.A./BUF
Reimer    - CGY/EDM

I'm hoping they sign Lucic, Russell, and then trade Taylor Hall for a defenceman that isn't nearly as good as Taylor Hall.

I respected Chiarelli in Boston but when you go run the Oilers, does it automatically make you a dumb executive?  Should he really be focusing on getting Lucic?  I get they need to get more toughness but Lucic is not going to come cheap and they have enough offense.  They need some defense.

I don't disagree, I think they'll pay too much on too long a term for a guy who's play likely won't age well -but he does add a dimension that they are lacking pretty badly -the team up front are way too easy to play against. I think it's fairly safe to say they'll be trading some of their forward youth (RNH, Hall, Yak, Eberle), so they'll address defense effectively through trade than free agency with some of those names.

I agree with the not aging well.  I see another Clarkson 2.0 but maybe a bit better.  Maybe 10 goals a year?  He's going to end up getting like $7M too probably for 7yrs.  It's going to be one of the Oiler's biggest mistakes.  Then they will trade RNH or Eberle for D which will hinder them more.

The problem is that the type of NHL defenseman they really need isn't the type who's available on the free agency market and, if he is, it's very hard for the Oilers to convince them to sign there. I've heard a lot of people say that the Oilers would have made a Shattenkirk deal on draft weekend but they were pretty convinced he'd just play out the year and sign somewhere else.

Right now they have 6 forwards who are real building block types in McDavid, Hall, RNH, Draisaitl, Eberle and Puljujarvi. Not only does keeping them all not make sense, you can't realistically from a cap point of view.

So regardless of signing Lucic, which I agree seems like a bad move, trading one or two of those guys is going to happen and that's their best avenue for adding D.

I dunno. Ten goals? I'd be surprised if he's that bad, especially in the short term. Hell, if he plays with Mcdavid, he'll get ten goals credited by just going to the net and having him bank them in off his skates.

Trading RNH or Eberle I doubt will hinder them nearly as much as not getting some substantial help on D.

There are reports out of Boston that the Bruins are preparing a big offer sheet for Jacob Trouba. That'd be interesting.

Chiarelli inherited almost every single piece of Boston's Stanley Cup winning team. If anything I think you could argue he's the reason they've fallen so hard in recent years. Their draft record when he was on the team is absolutely terrible aside from the Seguin and Hamilton picks, and he has Burke to thank for those. And of course he undid that by sending Seguin away for basically nothing.

Four 1st round picks to Winnipeg!

via Joe Haggerty:

The real price for the Black and Gold would be surrendering four first round picks, but the Bruins have made five first round picks in the last two years while stockpiling their prospect cupboard. The B?s have also been hit-or-miss with their first round picks, so sacrificing a few of them for a surefire, young defenseman would theoretically be worth the price.

So losing 4 first round picks wouldn't be so bad because:

1) The Bruins have had lots of first round picks in recent years so their cupboard is full
2) The Bruins aren't very good when it comes to making selections in the 1st round pick so dealing them for a sure thing makes more sense wait a minute doesn't that completely contradict point 1 oh Joe!

So there's no point in dealing with Sweeney after this, even though he's an easy sell, as there'd be nothing we'd want :(
