Optimism totally appreciated, but last year Tampa's top five (1st for goals) scored 144 goals, Winnipeg's (2nd for goals) scored 150 goals, Pittsburg's (tied for 3rd with Leafs) scored 156 goals, and the Leafs' had 151 goals. Your 181 (excluding Marner) is bit on the high side. Somebody's going to take a hit in goals.

That's a fair point but we should keep in mind those teams didn't have both John Tavares and Auston Matthews.

Yeah but even so would that make up that many more goals?

As the eternal pessimist in me battles with the overwhelming optimism of the forward situation - the way I see it, if there's any injury issues up front, with this kind of scoring depth, the leafs won't miss a beat. Not too many teams can say that.

Fun.

I fully expect this Leafs team to score more goals than any team in recent memory.

We can and we will.

The only thing that really matters is scoring at least one more goal than the opposing team in the final game of the postseason.

Zee, you forgot that Kapi is going to net 40 and Glitter Boy will bag 25 on his way to an upset Calder.  So that's like almost 250 right there.

Of course.

But you're right, there are probably some optimistic takes here. Here's my guesses:

Matthews: 51
Tavares: 37
Nylander: 31
Kadri: 26
Marner: 22

That's 167 goals. Before I did my guesses I figured the total would be about 170. Bullfrog pointed out last years top-5 combined for 151 goals, but that's with Matthews missing a quarter of the season. They would have likely hit 160 had he not been injured.

With Tavares/Marner, I figure they'll likely combine for about 60 goals one way or another. It'll either be something like 40-20 or 35-25.

I think Marleau's goal totals drop. I figure the trio of him, Matthews, and Nylander will be around 100 goals. So based on my other estimates that puts him at about 18. Hopefully the drop in goals is cancelled out with a rise in assists and he still comes in at around 45-50 points.

Kadri's totals likely drop a bit too after back-to-back 32 goal seasons. His powerplay production likely remains about the same but his 5-on-5 production will come down a little. Still, 26 goals for 3C ain't bad.

Now you're just mocking me.  :-\

I want the Leafs to score over 300 goals this season, last year was 277, let's do this!

Let's go for 6 30 goals scorers.

I see 6 candidates for that happening:

Matthews
Tavares
Kadri
Marleau
Nylander
Marner

The last two names on that list would surprise me.  Considering the amount of shots they take, they'd have to have some serious luck (15% Shooting%).  Nylander does have a fantastic shot, but doesn't use it enough and doesn't have a great finishing rate so far in his career.

Marleau still has a bit of a shot because he's the king of EN goals, but he'd also surprise me.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see us only have two 30 goal men (but 3-4 in the 25-30g range)

My predictions:

Matthews: 51
Tavares: 37
Kadri:  28
Nylander:  26
Marleau:  25
Marner: 23

Call me nuts but I think there'll be an unexpected presence in our top 6 goalscorers. Whether because of injuries or line shuffling, I think someone else might squeak in there with one of those weird 26-14 sort of seasons.
