2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

We keep talking about Robertson's potential, his motor, his talent, etc., but outside of one very very good game what has he shown to deserve being in the lineup?  I don't have any beef with the guy, but I haven't noticed him much in any of the other games he did get into.  I haven't been paying the slightest attention to Holmberg but already he's made more of an impact than Nick.  I wish it were otherwise.

The first couple of games of Holmberg I thought he just looked like a safe player.  As he is getting more comfortable with the lineup though, he has a decent shot and he goes to the right places to generate offense.

I agree that Robertson isn't really showing those things consistently.  He works hard but he seems all over the place rather than doing things to create the next play.  He seems like a noticeable step behind on evolving the play right now.  I don't know if that is just a size limitation thing but sitting and watching games in the box can't help the timing very much.

This sweet summer child has no idea what the letter Z has been co-opted to represent these days. He also apparently has no idea who Zeus was (he was a leader of the gods, right) and got a huge arm tattoo of Zeus but it was actually Neptune.

And almost every single one of those guys mentioned are currently developing their game in the AHL right now, not sitting in a press box and playing hockey once in a span of 16 days.

I think Rossi was in limbo for a bit, but yeah. For whatever its worth, Robertson's areas for development are more in the decision making department (and some skating mechanics), to my eye. We're getting to the point where real ice time is more meaningful if only from a conditioning stand point. Run him in a 3rd line checking role on the Marlies as if he was a Leaf and give him PK duties.

I also wonder if there are, barring any injuries, games earmarked in advance for the rotating forwards. It's pretty obvious when Simmonds is hitting the ice.

Of the three, Malgin brings the most value at a neutral state, but none of the three are hurting the team in curated minutes (unlike Clifford and previously Vesey and Ritchie).

All the talk of him having done his time in the AHL and having nothing left to learn there and learning more watching the NHL etc? he?s played 51 AHL games over 3 seasons for 22 goals and 24 assists. No AHL post season appearances.

I mean yeah that?s almost a point per game and all. But it doesn?t strike me as having outgrown the AHL, either.

Just using existing players on the team for example.

William Nylander 14G 32P in 37GP in the AHL after putting up 20P in 21GP in Sweden and 10P in 7GP in the World Juniors.

He then went back to the AHL the following year and put up 18G 45P in 38GP before being with the Leafs and then went back to the AHL for the playoffs.

Nylander was a considerably better prospect than Robertson.  I really struggle to see where Nick is "too good" for the AHL when Nylander was put in a position to play 75G in the AHL competing for a team with less depth.

If Dubas/Keefe think that the coaching isn't well equipped to have him developing in the AHL, that speaks more to the organization as a whole.  This would be one of the first times we have had the argument that not playing games is better for your development than playing in games.

They were activley tanking that year....theres a reason he didn't play behind the likes of Byron Froese, Shawn Matthias, and collin greening

Babcock had him in 2015/2016. I always remember Babcock being a big proponent of players developing in the minors. Was Carlyle of a similar mindset as well?

"...and you guys know I speak to many many people on a consistent basis...for example the gas station attendant where I get gas for my truck...he says Matthews could leave...and my barber said Matthews, since his contract is up in a year and a half, Matthews could leave.  And you guys have met my mom Barbara...Barbi said once that Matthews could leave...there's just 3 people off the top of my head, so really I think it's entirely possible that Matthews leaves."

Whats the cole's notes on this? Don't wanna listed to Kypreos.

Something about a hot dog habit that just isn't being scratched properly in Hogtown. Going to look for tastier climes.

MLHS write ups are better than most other Toronto Maple Leaf beats. Rarely ever the first, but their thoughts are more thoroughly considered. Proper analysis, not just reporting.

Only 6 games in the next 15 days.  A good chance to get a practice or two in and hopefully have some bodies start coming back after that.

I'm expecting a bit of a downer when some big ticket players come back (Brodie, Rielly). Teams tend to relax on those return games because ol' reliable is back on the ice and they take their foot off the gas (the reverse effect of when everyone tightens up their game when a big name goes down). Let's hope it only lasts about a period before they kick back into gear and take full advantage of the incoming talent.
