2022 Blue Jays

Ditch Toronto for some other city for my trans athlantic support and inexplicable emotional investment/distress?

It was done when they took Gausman out.

I turned it off at 8-1 figuring I'd get some other things done and watch the rubber match ...

Your right, Schneider made a huge gaffe not letting Gausman finish that inning, the last couple of batters he faced he was still pitching well. I blame him for this massive loss.

Baseball is a stupid sport anyway.

Ultimately the frustrating thing for me is that this isn't the first time that Bo has barrelled head on through a play.  That was Springer's ball.  Whether he gets to the ball if he doesn't have Bo coming down on him, I'm not sure but I'm really done with the Bo Bichette as shortstop experiment.

Dead last in Defensive runs saved for qualified shortstops (-16).  Third last in all of MLB if you include all players who played at least 10 innings of SS.

Dead last in UZR for both qualified and all shortstops.

Tied for 2nd last in Outs Above Average

2nd in overall errors at the position.  First in fielding errors, 2nd in throwing errors.

He's a phenomenal offensive talent but Bo is a terrible shortstop.

Not the Jays, but I think this belongs here nonetheless.

I have a slightly different read on the play. Bichette knows Springer is playing deep to prevent a double getting to the wall so he should be going back on a ball he could potentially make a play on. Springer, coming forward, has a better read on the play and if he calls off Bichette then Bichette should yield to Springer but either Springer didn't do that or Bichette didn't hear him

Either way I think Springer has to be more cautious there. The one thing you can't allow is what happened which is not just the ball dropping but Springer not being able to make a play on a dropped ball because of the collision. Unless he's 100% sure he can make the play, and that includes being aware of other fielders, the smarter play for him is to prevent disaster.

That said, I don't really blame anyone. It was just a freak thing where a ball was hit in precisely the wrong spot. Not much you can do.

He certainly had a bad defensive year but he's been better than he was this year so I wouldn't necessarily write him off completely as being unable to play the position well. I think if the Jays have a good alternative SS option then I'd be good with them pursuing it as moving Bichette over to 2B also solves the issue of none of their options there being great but otherwise I think Bichette getting another year and seeing if he's more the guy we saw before isn't terrible as you maybe wait on someone like Martinez getting to the bigs.

In 2021 he was the second worst qualified shortstop at -14 defensive runs saves.  He was last in UZR at -20.6

In 2020 he was marginally better with +2 DRS with a -5.2 UZR

He shows flashes of being a good fielder because he?s athletic and I do understand that defensive metrics aren?t perfect but I don?t think he has ever been a good defensive player

I mean they absolutely have to find a better option than just putting Espinal at SS if they are going to move him but I?m not expecting to see the Jays break the bank so improving their team defense would go a long way to improving the team

There are, no doubt, some defensive metrics where he grades out poorly. There are others where he grades out more towards the middle of the pack. To me this doesn't say so much that the metrics are imperfect but rather that like every metric they tell part of the story and not the whole.

Bichette in particular is a case where I think you do want to sit down and ask what it is that he does badly and whether these are things he's incapable of improving on. To my mind, a lot of his struggles defensively are more mental than physical and involve him rushing plays he doesn't need to/getting so-so jumps on balls, particularly ones he has to go in on. For a guy his age and with his tools, I think it'd be disappointing if these struggles led to the conclusion that the team needs to move in another direction but like I said I'd 100% understand it if they definitively had a better option.

I'm a little surprised.

I'm not. He had a pretty flawed team playing at a 100 win pace. Not bringing him back on the basis of really just one bad playoff game would be a pretty questionable decision and pretty out of step with how the current management group tends to do things.

Exactly. It would be quite the overreaction to dismiss him based on a bad series with the results he had in half a season at the helm. His overall performance earned him at least the opportunity to have a full season as manager.

Any of you baseball nerds know what the story is here?

Apparently there was conflict between the President and GM.  Click wanted to make some moves that the team opposed (and were right to do).  He then was bitching at the GM meeting and they used it as an argument to move on.

The core of the Astros wasn?t put together by him so the organization didn?t like his ideas and felt previous GM built the core of what has been a constant contender.
