2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

This might be a bit of a hot take but goalie coaches are probably the most overrated (or maybe just overanalyzed) part of a hockey staff. At least from a fan perspective.

I don't know that there's a big difference between the "#1 goalie coach" and the "#10 goalie coach" but I think a good goalie coach can make a difference. Especially when a goalie is struggling.

Former Coyotes goalie coach so you'd assume there'd be some familiarity with Treliving there. Good luck in Pittsburgh.

Former Soo goalie coach under Dubas, so, you know, continuing his trend of trying to get the band back together.

Also, should probably be pointed out, he wasn't a goalie coach with the Leafs - or, at least, not THE goalie coach. That's Curtis Sanford. Elkin's official job was Goaltender Evaluation and Development.

Willy?s golf skills do not transfer to baseball hitting. Auston is lacking leg drive but has the leverage and bat speed to muscle it out. Mo remembers t-ball.

I don?t know how much of a career is left after this for a goalie

My guess, without the facts, would be odds are probably against him.
Depends a lot on what they did or found and how long he'd had the problem which we may never know.
Both hips lowers his chances as the chances he has a persistent problem with one of them will be higher.

I take it as sad news. Hoping for the best.

I'm sure he'll give it a go after surgery but I can't see him being capable of maintaining a career after this.  The bilateral hip surgery should probably shut up the "Leafs are just cap circumventing" crowd.

Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving announced today that Curtis McElhinney has been hired as the Director of Goaltending Development and Scouting, Jake Muzzin has been named a Pro Scout and Chris Bourque will assume a new role as a College Free Agent Scout.

Muzzin was already in the pressbox for the Leafs most nights. Might as well give him a notebook and a few things to watch while he snacks.

We're going to look a little sloppy for the first couple of weeks and it will be the adjustment to this scheme (that Tampa is not deploying this year). There was a miscommunication in one of the preseason games between Reaves and Rielly that led to the guy at the top getting an open look through traffic.

This scheme takes advantage of our faster forwards and insulates the defensemen by increasing the chances of killing plays above the hash marks, per the follow-up tweet.

Brownscombe (and maybe the other MLHS guys?) seems skeptical about keeping Minten up.  I think they should be able to make a clear decision before the 10-game mark.  As they pointed out, his line was the worst last night (Knies didn't have a great game either).

It was one atrociously played game. Let's see what happens.

The line definitely wasn't good, but I'm going to give him more than one game before we say that he's overmatched.  It's a good reminder why preseason hockey is irrelevant when it comes to more meaningful hockey though.  Dennis Malgin looked like a superstar last year.

I heard rumblings of it last night. Seems very premature.
The only goal scored while Minten was on the ice happened when Liljegren coughed up the puck in the d-zone - not directly Minten's fault.
He won 60% of his draws. They sheltered him with the 2nd lowest TOI.
He wasn't dominant. He looked a little like a deer in the headlights. But it was his first NHL game, season opener with Toronto vs Montreal.

He's up against it. As Treliving said: there are not many 19 year olds who make a difference in this league. The odds are against him. I hope the media shut up for a few games. If he can pull this off, it would be pretty big as Treliving could probably focus on getting some help on the D.

While I think there's a good chance he does end up back in junior, unless the plan here was always to give him a game or two of experience before sending him back (which feels unlikely), you need to give him a legit run of games or see a clear pattern before pushing any real skepticism on it.

Opening night games are often sloppy, mistake filled affairs. Don't make any judgements on that - other than Matthews is going to have a monster year, obviously.

Minten and Knies improved as the night wore on, but they were also relegated to the bench when chasing the game. NHL hockey is faaaaast; they'll adjust.

It took a little while for Matthews to get going that first game too.
