2023 Offseason Trades & Signings

My edit suggetsted 50% would have been better, but they are already using 2 retention slots (Ekholm for 3 years, Johansen for 2 years) so maybe thet didn't want to use up the last one on this.

Man, I didn't even catch that they retained on Ekholm. They used one of their 3 spots for 3 more years there to retain FOUR PERCENT on Ekholm, who was already on a perfectly reasonable contract. And they didn't even get that great of a return for him. Mind boggling.

Also, going to be interesting to see which RFAs go unqualified. Could be a good number of potential reclamation projects out there. Not going to be a ton of top quality pieces, but there should be some interesting names out there.

Based off the first wave of announcements so far Puljujarvi, Gurianov, Comtois, and Steel (again) would be the names that jump out the most.

Yeah. Poolparty is going to a tough one - he jsut had double hip surgery, so, who knows when he'll be back? Could be out for the year.

Steel could be a great under the radar add.

Puljujarvi having virtually zero success in Carolina of all places kinda kills a lot of the interest that I previously had in him. And yeah that double hip surgery doesn't sound great either. I'd toss a fully buriable contract offer his way just to see what happens but I wouldn't really expect much.

edit: if healthy I wonder if he could actually fill the Engvall-role on a Kampf line. Tall fast winger with solid puck transition skills.

Pacioretty would be the biggest wild card of the 3 but one of him, Duchene, and Wheeler would be big to boost our wing depth and secondary scoring.

I feel like one more penalty killer is needed, as these are the combos right now:

Kampf - Marner
Jarnkrok - Lafferty
Holmberg?  Knies?

Of those 3 UFAs, Wheeler is the only one who kills penalties regularly, so I would probably lean towards him, but Duchene at the 3C spot would be pretty sweet too.

Wheeler's PK minutes are very limited and Duchene has primarily played on the wing the past few seasons (while still being an effective face off guy). But yeah, another penalty killer or two is certainly a need as well.

Yamomoto or Brown could be options to fill a PK role.

Just spitballing:

Jarnkrok-Matthews-Marner
Knies-ROR-Nylander
Duchene-Tavares-Brown
Reaves-Kampf-Lafferty
McMann

Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Liljegren
Giordano-Timmins
7D

Samsonov
Woll

Sammy signed to $3.5mil and Murray dealt. ROR ($5mil), Duchene ($3.5mil), Brown ($2.5mil), Reaves (begrudgingly $1.5mil). $1.09mil left to spend on a 7D.

Obviously I focused all the cap space on forwards here. Hypothetically a Ryan Graves could be an option on D at $5mil with Brodie then being dealt to clear the space if Treliving wanted to see some more size to the back end.

I don't like that D much at all! Forwards look great though.

There were some injury issues for both Dermott and Bear that played a role here I'm sure but another lesson you should stop being that impressed with defencemen who do well in only sheltered bottom pair minutes and don't play on specialty teams.

Well if we weren't overpaying 2 forwards on the 4th line in that projection maybe I could have done more for the D.

Marginally surprised by Kravstov. He's really shown nothing at the NHL level so far. Thought maybe Hoglander would shake loose, too, after having an awful season and getting send to the AHL.

Its a one year deal to find one of the toughest son of bit_s in the league, Dubas biggest mistakes was not signing him last year instead of W.S.

Sean Avery had a colourful term for this

Simmonds was signed 2 years ago yesterday.
