Ah, our old friend finally came through on an offer sheet play

TOTALLY a separate transaction *WINK* *WINK*

Do you think Armstrong got pilloried in the GM group chat?

Or did Bowman threaten to match unless there was a bit more juice?

I mean I imagine this is exactly what happened. Especially after Edmonton cleared up enough cap space to potentially match both of them. Genuinely a pretty smart move on their part. They handled this whole situation pretty well.

I think St. Louis should've just waited for Edmonton to blink. Can't be thaaat in love with Broberg and Holloway.

He scored 44 goals in his second season in the league.  Hit 30 the year after, his next highest total.

To his credit he was scoring at a 35-goal pace in the two seasons prior to this most recent one. And that was with Boone Jenner and Jack Roslovic as his centres. On a not-dysfunctional team, with real quality line mates, and his injury/personal problems behind him I think Laine could absolutely get back to being a 40+ goal guy. Now of course those are a lot of "ifs" and it's possible none of them are able to happen.

Bowman would say that he can't save face not keeping at least one of them, unless....

It probably was a bluff on Edmonton's part too. The Broberg offer was just way too much of an overpayment. The Holloway one wasn't as bad but ultimately he could end up being a dime a dozen player and the Oilers loaded up on wings this offseason so he might not even had a spot in the line-up.

I appreciate EDM's professionalism towards the offer sheets. They got more from STL because of it.

The Kotkaniemi offer sheet comes to mind. Carolina overpaid Kotkaniemi with a $6.1M offer sheet in reaction to MTL signing Aho to an offer sheet. MTL lets him walk. It then feels like because of Don Waddell's comical overpay he attempts to prove it wasn't a mistake by again overcommiting to Kotkaniemi by signing him to an extension and now CAR has this contract handcuffing a contending team.

Offer sheets are part of the business and should be treated as such.

The Kotkaniemi contract is def bad but I wouldn't say they're handcuffed. Canes have 6.4M in space currently with a 22 man roster.

Not sure I'd call them handcuffed exactly but worth noting that an unsigned Seth Jarvis (*wipes away tear*) will almost certainly take up more than that left over space.

Honestly it's probably a smart move by Edmonton to let a Darren Ferris client walk.

I mean would it have killed Columbus to retain a little bit if it meant getting an actual return? Laine only has 2 years left on his deal and Columbus is currently showing with $18mil in cap space for this season.

I heard in the radio this morning (can?t remember who it was, Seravalli maybe) that the offers when being asked to retain salary weren?t any better than the Montreal offer.

Oops. Also: 'fewer'

Nick Robertson is eligible for an offersheet, btw.

St. Louis seems like a good coach to have for a guy who needs to rebuild his confidence/career.  Montreal still doesn't have expectations to be contending this year that should also take some pressure off if he's not scoring at a 40 goal pace 10 games into the season.  It's a smart gamble from Montreal.  They gave up a bottom pairing defensemen for a guy who could be a solid top pairing scoring winger.  Bottom line, Montreal needed scoring and they got a guy who scores at a good pace.

I'm having a hard time seeing Montreal making very many mistakes since they got rid of Bergevin

Still early on their more impactful decisions - drafting, prospects they've acquired, etc. - but, yeah, the moves with direct impact on the NHL roster have mostly been solid value moves. They haven't all worked out as they hope - Pearson, for example, was useless and they weren't able to flip him at the deadline for more assets - but they've been worthwhile plays. Laine is in the vein, even if he doesn't succeed in Montreal.

DUBAS

(More minutes for Moldenhauer since McGroarty is most assuredly jumping into the NHL)

Edit: Brayden Yager going the other way
2023 14th OA for the 2022 14th OA
Dubas? first draft pick post Leafs career (but technically not really his draft)

I think the Pens still do really well here considering they get a probably better prospect who is able to start playing NHL games right now (very important to them for obvious reasons) but that's about as good of a return for Winnipeg too considering the trade request/UFA pressure. Yager's probably about Easton Cowan-ish.
