2024-25 General Trades and Signings

This might have something to do with that. Circling back to some Marner offseason trade frameworks and maybe expedite those for C/RD with term.

The trades today at least provide a little bit of cost certainty for next season which should help the Marner negotiations one way or another. They would have certainly paid much more than $5mil for a 3C and top-4 RHD if those came via free agency.

I might think camp Marner isn't too pleased with the Rantanan numbers.

I think it's kinda simple. Some teams are only going to be comfortable paying Marner/Rantanen types $12mil-ish. Some teams would be comfortable paying them $13-15mil probably. It's going to come down to what kind of team does Marner want to spend the rest of his career with.

Elliotte debunked a lot of what Kyper said.
I trust Friedman a ton more than Kyper. I think Kyper basically passes on anything he hears that isn’t absurd. He doesn’t look for corroboration or even check if it passes the smell test. That leads to a lot of inaccurate info, missing context, assumptions, etc. Friedman, on the other hand, is much more judicious. If it comes from him, it’s either been corroborated or it’s been properly parsed.

Sign with Chicago for an extra $1m per year, $7m (and $5m less in total money going on an 8-year deal) and enjoy missing the playoffs and suffer from probably the worst front office in hockey.

I didn't hear anything from Friedge that debunked what Kyper said. Friedge was actually saying Kyper did a good job on his trade board. Canes in the end liked Stankhoven more vs. prospect pieces and the Leafs weren't gonna trade Knies. I know Kyper can be a blowhard but it doesn't make him a liar.

He can do a sign and trade to get his 8th year if need be. Maybe he'll pull a Matthews and go for a 4 year deal. One thing for sure, Marner will get his money one way or the another.

Ask Marner for his shortlist of teams he wants to try, let their GMs know, then work a sign and trade or picks for negotiation rights just before the draft.

Yup, if he's determined to test the market. I don't buy any of it. I think he loves being a Leaf and playing with Matthews.

I haven’t heard it myself yet
But I’m reading the auto transcript and it’s not exactly like that

In discussing why the Leafs went after Rantanen
JS: So what does that do to Marner now? Because it doesn't sound like the negotiations are going amazing. I mean, really?

JM: They're not Jonas.

JS: Right? And so like-

JM: I think the Leafs are not putting this out there. So this is just, I don't want anyone to say that I'm reporting something here, but I think the Leafs are very frustrated with where that's at. They really wanted to get it done.

I think they feel like they made really strong good faith offers and went pretty far. You know, I'm pretty sure they've offered more than what [Rantanen] just signed for. And I think that one's going right down to July 1.

And I think what's going to have to happen is Marner's going to have to decide, does he want to come back and take less or does he want to get the most that he possibly can on the open market? Because I think those are two different things.

On the latest 32 Thoughts, Friedman repeated Kypreos’ reporting on the Leafs’ offer for Rantanen. Did not say he heard the same thing but reiterated what was said in two separate instances (talking about Rantanen, and then talking about the Leafs’ deadline)

“I think that they didn't have a trade at that time, but a little bit. So I think there were some teams that talked.

I think the Kings were in, but he wasn't willing to sign there. I think the Maple Leafs were in. And Nick reported that on Friday, when it was uncertain, they offered Minten, Cowan and a couple of firsts.

I think some teams are interested in him as a rental, but I just don't think there was a player on the table as good as Stankoven can be. That he was the best player that was available to them, and plus the two first-rounders. That, you know, that's a reasonable package.”
