4 Nations Face-Off

They're pretty deep at C, and have Eriksson Ek+Lindholm for defensive roles. Arvidsson over Rakell though is pretty odd. They also passed on William Eklund, currently 6th among Swedish players in points.

I was thinking about Eklund as well; didn't want too many kids? Rakell would make way more sense than Arvidsson too, but they seem pretty loaded with firepower on the wings. Wennberg has played wing and can cover defensively in a pinch. Honestly not sure what Arvidsson is capable of at all right now.

Would have liked to have seen Canada do the same with Bedard and/or Celebrini.

For Canada’s level of depth, Jarvis fits that bill. Everyone is two-way reliable up front and I can’t say that about Bedard/Celebrini yet.

Crosby/McDavid/Bedard in concept sounds amazing to have 3 generational guys but Bedard hasn't exactly arrived yet. I don't disagree with his omission but I feel like the Olympics is more important than this tournament and would have liked to see him get the experience.

I understand what you're getting at, but I don't think this NHL-only micro-tournament would be all that informative in terms of providing experience for a tournament like the Olympics. He got more relevant experience in the World Championship last summer (and will almost certainly be offered the same option this summer).

I think the players will care quite a bit. Representing their countries is always a big deal, and it's been a long time since the last best on best tournament. Crosby and McDavid finally playing together and also probably the most stacked U.S. team ever will both be pretty big storylines.
I agree with CTB, players do care about representing their countries, a macho pride thing. And yes we will all watch because the hype machine hasn't even gone into overdrive as yet. And don' we want to watch the best players in the world playing competitive hockey.

I'm expecting an entertaining tourny. Not something on the same level as the Olympics or World Cup, but akin to a series of really high level regular season games between elite teams (though, obviously, with higher overall talent levels). It's a short event, so, teams will be going for it right from the start, but without the prestige of major international tournaments, I don't expect it to reach peak intensity until the championship game. It will be much more entertaining than the All Star Game would have been, though.

I'm going to Boston for the last games. Anticipating team Canada and US will dominate. And the edge to Team USA.

Lines are starting to percolate as teams take their first practices.

CANADA:
Marner checks in on McDavid's wing at even strength (Reinhart-McDavid-Marner) and will patrol the half-wall on PP2.

US: haven't practiced yet

SWEDEN: haven't practiced yet
Didn't McDavid specifically request Marner at his side?

Which would be a great bargaining tactic by McDavids agent because it sends the signal that there might be competition for his contract resign.

McDavid Marner will be sick to watch. Add Reinhart and the goalies are gonna have a problem.

Thanks for posting.

The fact that it was released into the public by media talking heads tells me it's a negotiating technique. A signal to the Oilers and the market that Toronto is DEFINITELY on the table for McDavids future contract. Otherwise... it's just a minor peer to peer conversation that will never see the light of day.

So McDavid (his agent) is sending this signal.

But It begs the question..... if Leafs sign Marner in 2025 for a massive amount..... then how do they afford McDavid?

Is there anyway to fit McDavids contract in Toronto under the new cap?

CANADA L2 @ practice

Stone-Crosby-MacKinnon

Imagine that as your second line. The speed at C an RW and then the weight on the left wing to give problems to the goalie. Just like L1.
