ACC to be renamed the Scotiabank Arena

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment has agreed to a landmark 20-year sponsorship agreement with Scotiabank to rename the Air Canada Centre, TSN has learned.

The agreement is worth about $800 million (Canadian), according to three sources familiar with the matter. Under MLSE?s previous agreement with Air Canada, struck in 1999, the airline paid about $4 million per year.

The agreement with Scotiabank, which will see the downtown Toronto arena renamed the Scotiabank Arena next July 1, is believed to be the highest-priced annual building and team sponsorship in North American sports history.

That's a lot of money.

If ever a brand wanted to actually build public goodwill they could by naming it "Maple Leaf Gardens at Scotiabank Place" or something along those lines.

I'll probably still just end up calling it "the arena" or "where the Leafs play".

Scotiabank Place - Ottawa
Scotiabank Centre - Halifax
Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary
Scotiabank Pond - North York/Toronto

Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

Sounds a bit odd to me. Meh, I guess it's just like how I hate the Rogers' Centre name.

It sounded weird to me because I thought Ottawa's arena was still sponsored by Scotiabank, but apparently they changed to Canadian Tire a few years ago.

Stealing this from Kristen Shilton‏, but Scotiabank Gardens would have been really nice.

Also, I know all of the banks shortened their names to just their initials but Scotiabank still sounds much stupider than just BNS or something.

Yeah. That would be been a good mix of the old and the new. I mean, if TD can do it in Boston . . .

... yeah, Arena I think is the lamest of monikers. I'm sure eventually the populace will find some quick short-form like "Ayy-Cee-Cee". I'm sure we've all said "going down to the Ayy-Cee-Cee" more than "going down to the Air Canada Centre". Probably "The Arena", as in "headed down to THE ARENA tomorrow to see the defending champs... so excited!"

This is going to be weird.  Having lived in Ottawa when the Sens played out of Scotiabank Place I still refer to that arena as "The Bank"... and now, that may become the nickname.

Then again, most people still call the Rogers Center by its proper name, Skydome.... so hopefully everyone still refers to it as the ACC.

I'm personally shocked and dismayed that MLSE, an organization that by general assent operates according to a superior moral compass, would simply sell off the name of a landmark to an even higher bidder than the previous highest bidder.  Does the franchise's rich history over the last 18 years mean nothing at all?

is all I can say about that....

Big Air Canada fan?  :-X

Yeah, I don't really get the outrage over this one. It's not the Skydome or Maple Leafs Gardens. It's just replacing one corporate sponsor with another. And it's not like we have fond memories of winning championships at the Air Canada Centre. Sure, ACC rolls of the tongue a little better but that's it.

Just like Rogers Centre will always be Skydome or The Dome,
and Budweiser Stage will always be Molson Amphitheatre,
and Honda Indy will be Molson Indy to me.

actually  no.

just hate the Scotiabank.

I'm in agreement with the train of thought that the name should just have historical value.

"where the Leafs play" sounds good to me.

Still call the other place 'Skydome' too. Ain't ever gonna change that :D
