Alain Vigneault fired

I guess that's true - I mean the series doesn't even go to 7 if Luongo doesn't give up 15 goals in the 3 Boston games. Still, it seems as if Gillis inherited a gold mine (from Burke and Nonis no less) is slowly pissing it away.

However, it is debatable on how much Gillis is at fault for and how much is actually just bad luck. The Sedins have regressed from 2011 and Kesler and Booth have been injured. The one knock on Gillis is he seriously bungled the Luongo file, from signing him to that contract in the first place to not trading him at the right time. Either way, the team has gone from Western Conference champions to twisting in the wind. Firing AV was a good move.

Keep in mind, I'm not really arguing strongly for Gillis or against him. I'm just saying that I could see how someone who was a big fan of Gillis, and I assume that Canucks ownership at least was at some point considering they hired him to run the team without front office experience, then I could see how they could look at the job he's done and say "He took the team really close to the cup with the players he was left, now let's see what he can do in terms of building a team from scratch".

That said, I don't think that they're going to go into full on tear-down mode but I can see why they could be convinced to stick with Gillis a little longer regardless.

Tortorella is bordering on Mike Keenan territory, whose act is getting thin and is no longer a fit within the NHL.

The Canucks are one of the last teams who I'd think would be attracted to him.

I don't know. He's the kind of coach whose act will wear thin eventually, but early success is likely. Given the Canucks short window to compete here, a season or two of Tortorella could make sense.

LOL this will be  a gong show.

The Sedins will LOVE this guy!!! (hooo boy).

Torts: "ALL OF YOU ARE SHOT BLOCKERS."

Radio in Vancouver is reporting that Torts is flying into Vancouver
today to accept the deal.

This is going to be crazy - and as a Canucks hater I love it.

So, the Canucks and Rangers basically trade head coaches? Neat.

Hey, Canucks fans, you know that coach of yours that couldn't get your team of overpaid, overhyped whiners over the hump? Well have I got a change of pace for you!

Can't remember who, but a media-type actually reported the Sedins were involved in the processed and pushed for Torts to be hired.

Torts is either going to be a great success in Vancouver or a massive failure. He'll be just what the team needed or the anchor that sinks them down further. Either way it'll be fun to watch.

For some odd reason I am now hoping that the newly Patrick Roy led Avalanche and the Canucks play each other as much as humanly possible next season.  8)

Torts is a very good coach. 8/12 years in the playoffs, a Stanley Cup, and a Jack Adams. 410-330 all time record excluding OTLs and ties. We all know about Tortorella's schtick with the media but in terms of coaching he's a master of getting the most out of his players (until he wears out his welcome and loses the room). He might be just what Vancouver needs to get over the hump.

Eakins and Ruff each received 4-year deals, and Vigneault and Tortorella each received 5.  Perhaps I shouldn't be, but I find the lengths surprising, particularly Eakins' and Tortorella's, and to a lesser extent Vigneault's.  The length of Ruff's seems reasonable.

I suppose my surprise comes from the fact the Leafs gave Carlyle "only" a 3-year deal on top of the one month in 2012.
