All-Star Weekend

I had no idea Stamkos was that huge... In that shirt, he looked like a Flintstone character. Also, Kudos to Lupul for rolling with the punches in style. In other news, Robbie Knievel, (son of Evil Knievel) will be flying into Ottawa as part of the festivities where he is going to try to jump over 10,000 Senators fans...

Lupul: "I don't want to be cheered in Ottawa anyway."

I wish he had said "I'm surprised there's so many Ottawa fans here. Usually when we're here it's full of Leaf fans".....

Any of you guys own an All-Star game jersey?

As a Sens fan, I can't imagine any All-Star Game in my lifetime being more special for me than this.  What with it being in Ottawa, Alfie and Chara as captains, 4 Sens represented, etc.  Yet I still feel no compulsion to get an ASG sweater.

I see a ton of people on tv wearing them.  Are they all freebies?  Who are these people buying jerseys that will be out of date by Sunday morning?

The awfulness of that draft show last night:

1. Having it in a room small enough to hear every single heckle clear as day.
2. Hearing "PICK BELAK" at one point right when Chara was making a pick.
3. The most horrible techno music in history being played between every single pick.

I don't fault Sens fans for booing, but Lupul getting more boos than Chara was hilarious and typical Ottawa.

Wow! Did someone really say that? I heard the yell but I though he said "Kessel" (which seemed kind of sad and stupid) as he was already picked but he said "Belak?" Incredible. Well, Karma's a female dog... If it doesn't find him, maybe it'll find the team he cheers for.

The same people who spent 1000 dollars on a ticket to the draft.

I felt the same way when the All-Star Game came to Toronto a decade ago.  I remember going with my 2 cousins and one of their 5 yr old son to the Metro Convention Centre where the FanFest was being held -- you know, where the fans can participate in shooting at a goalie, get in the broadcast booth and announce a play-by-play, etc., etc.  I think I had more fun than my cousin's 5 yr old!!

Of yeah, there was plenty of stuff to buy, collectibles and such, including the ASG jersey, which for some reason or other, I, too, didin't feel compelled to buy.

"One fan went too far in terms of bad taste, at one point yelling Wade Belak?s name as Chara and Lupul mulled over who to pick in the 15th round. The former Leaf defenceman who died last summer. That outburst was quickly vilified on Twitter, with a tweet by hockey fan Tim Schisler typifying the reaction: ?To the guy who yelled out Draft Wade Belak! last night, you?re a disgrace to society."

There is a video out there of it somewhere but YouTube is blocked at work for me so I can't track it down.

Unbelievable.

Don't you worry though. Bruce Arthur via twitter is on the case as far as making sure we are all aware of how terrible this was.  He will set anyone straight who isn't already aware, including the culprit I am sure, via 3 or 4 columns on the subject.

Cox's 2 most recent columns, one on the ASG returning to the hockey heartland and the other on the Sid/Ovie rivalry era being over, are worth a read.

As for the rivalry, I think it's a mistake for hockey to try to market itself on the basis of individuals.  The injury to Crosby and Overchkin's decline are big red flags as to why.  And, I truly think, hockey fans are different from fans of sports like basketball and football, where flamboyant players are always the center of attention.  Hockey fans in general appreciate the team play and knowledgeable fans really delve into the finer points.  And there is a refreshing culture of humility built into hockey that really appeals to people like me who are sick to death of hype in all walks of life.
