That's not really on the other hand. If Johnsson turns out to be a good player that'd be fine and dandy but it doesn't change what situation the Leafs are in with regards to the big 4 forwards they need to pay. The better that Johnsson is, the harder it'll be to keep him.

Right and again, that's true even if he's a good player. If you have 4 forwards taking up 40-50% of your cap the odds of being able to keep a fifth good forward long term are pretty small. Especially with the Leafs where they have guys like Kadri and Kapanen who they'd also like to keep. Unfortunately the cap means you have to be willing to move on from guys like Johnson even if he blossoms.
The Kucherov comparison is ridiculous but he does have the potential to be a decent contributor. The Leafs will just need to bring up other guys with similar potential. Given that they have a lot of prospects on the wing, that shouldn't be too much to ask.
