Ashton Suspended

So why not appeal? That's a lot of money he is losing.

Because if things happened the way he describes then any successful appeal would result in a drastically different policy than the one they have.

Perhaps, but unless Bettman is willing to go full Goodell, the result of the appeal will be under the rules that were in place at the time of the alleged offence.

As a sufferer myself, I can tell you that none of the really great inhalers that I use contain this drug and it is not allowed in the US as far as I can tell.
For any other bronchial sufferers there is a thing called NAC that really helps and the nice thing is it benefits the liver as well.
Sorry Ashton but Frattin will now get his chance to sink or swim, or will they call up Leivo?

Do we honestly want Leivo on the 4th line.

I think he was in a bit of denial and was waiting on a second attack or incident to happen before he went to a doctor about it. He maybe didn't want to admit that he had a condition that might affect the job he has and loves. He is human after all and people make mistakes.

The most important thing in all of this is that he is owning his mistake and acknowledges his lapse in judgement. Hence why he is not appealing.

Some people like Jeter deny it till the bitter end ( and then admit it to the DEA while under oath) and then only end up looking not just like a cheat but a liar as well.

I bet that the team and organization as a whole pays more attention to medication and scripts now.

I don't think this is the end of his career tho.

And it is being reported that his cap hit will not count while suspended. That's a small plus out of this situation.

I hope this doesn't result in someone like Leivo being brought up just to sit in the press box rather then getting playing time he needs rather then popcorn and a beer in a comfy seat.

Not saying I want Leivo on the 4th line but they seem to want to bolt Frattin to the press box for some reason or other.

I don't entirely know what you mean by this but what I'm saying is that Ashton wouldn't be appealing on the basis of a mishandled test or similar procedural error. What's being advocated is that he appeal on the basis that the policy is wrong and should make allowances for something it currently doesn't.

So the question now is does Ashton still count against the cap? Players suspended for on-ice incidents still have their cap hits count. That could really cause the Leafs some problems if it does.

@draglikepull posted this to Twitter commenting that they didn't think it would count against the cap: http://www.broadstreethockey.com/2011/9/27/2453124/jody-shelley-suspension-salary-cap

Yup, Mirtle confirms:

James Mirtle @mirtle  ?  1h 1 hour ago
I'm told now that Ashton will not count on the Leafs cap. Rare instance where that's the case. Voynov is counting on Kings cap.

If being held scoreless and sitting in the press box is how Ashton performs while on PEDs just imagine how he will do without them!  :-[

Yeah... I mean I've been on Symbicort, Salbutimol, floven, ventolin, alupent and prednisone. I can't imagine any of these except for prednisone being a problem.

In this day and age for professional athletes, its unfathomable to me how someone could be so stupid as to "borrow" someone's medication - knowing that PED testing is part of the job. Especially when he could have had a Leaf dr. help him out within ten minutes of asking.

That said, I don't believe (and this is extremely rare) that he took it for a performance advantage.

How does asthma medication have a banned substance? Is prednisone also banned?

I would guess that whoever gave it to him when he had his first attack probably got it from a company in asia. Plenty of knock off stuff comes from there from clothes to medication.

Just because NA and some UK countries have banned it doesn't mean it still isn't being used elsewhere.
Lots of people from canada and the states goto mexico, asia and the UK for prescriptions and other things that are over priced here.

It was given to him when he was having an attack, most people are not going to stop and think at a time like that weather it has something that could be illegal when they are in distress.  I  think he was maybe hoping it was a one off and nothing to be concerned about. Bad choice yes but i think it was simply that. If he was going to take a PED one would think that he would use something else that would have a better effect on him as a whole.

You use ventolin. That's it. Everyone uses it. Why was he given something different?

Pretty irresponsible of Ashton to ingest steroids - I commend the league for catching him. I'm sure everyone on the blue & white were peeing in bottles and surrounded by people in lab coats today.

'Performance Enhancing' ... just where on the Leafs is this happening?

Whose inhaler was he using and cheating with? I'm assuming that steroid user didn't make the team? I hope the league is all over the Leafs and testing them all daily for the remainder of the season.

Hourly. Can't let anything slip.
