Auston Matthews

Ultimately I think what's going on with Matthews right now might be a good thing. This is probably the first time in his life he's hit a patch like this and he has to work through it. The fact that his line is still working hard and getting their chances should be evidence enough that this is just a run of bad luck and it might be beneficial for Matthews to see how much harder it is to score in the NHL than anywhere else.

I would agree with that. That wide open net he missed by 10 feet last night was a goal all day long if he wasn't squeezing his stick so hard. A slower start would have been better than what happened at the season opener. Confidence through the roof, and then completely gone. I have faith he finds his touch soon and he will become the star player everyone knows that he'll be. It just needs to happen more gradually.

This is only because I enjoy ruining jokes with science; urinating on yourself actually cools you down. You're both releasing heat energy stored in the water of your urine (water has a high specific heat capacity), as well as losing heat to evaporation in the urine-affected areas. Camels pee on their legs to stay cool in the desert, for example, while humans sweat to release heat.

Nerd.

Matthews himself says he had a scoring drought last season in the Swiss league.  He's still been dominant out there considering his age and position.

There's a recent article by Travis Yoast looking at goal-scoring droughts, given that Matthews and McDavid are both in one. Ovechkin takes the prize, never having gone more than 6 games without a goal, and that only 3 times. Pretty impressive.

Don't think this has been mentioned really, but Auston Matthews is currently generating more shots on net than any other 19 year old in the past 20 years (via @coreypronman):

Marner's not doing so bad either of course.

I gotta ask - how many 19 year olds getting close to Matthews' TOI are we comparing to? It can't be a very large group, surely.

Matthews will be fine. He's hit a bunch of posts and crossbars of this stretch and had bunch of close misses. Not unlike what Kadri went through early last season getting used to Babcock. I would like to see what Soshnikov might do on that line. Just a question, has Hyman ever played center? I thought I read somwhere he could play all three forward postions, but I could be mistake.
I am not entire sold on Ben Smith, decent on faceoffs and penalty kill but it seems like with Martin and Soshnikov on wings that line could be chipping in a little more offence. Not that the Leafs need it necessarily. I thought Freddie the Goat had a decent training camp. His skating has definitely improved.
Maybe Leipsic gets a call up eventually to play along side Matthews and Nylander. He has some bite to his game. Just don't see same chemistry with Hyman as with Nylander and Matthews.
Nice to see Kadri, Brown and Komarov starting to click. That's two lines going for sure. A few tweaks and the others may improve too.

The best part of this video are their fake personalities  ;D

Pretty sure they shot this during Matthews' goal drought.

The kid in me is jealous watching this video. It would be a lot of fun to skate around a set on ice and trash it with slap shots.

There's something satisfyingly meta about Matthews two-handing the camera off its mount.

Shooting mechanics on a 'catch and release' shot.

Members of the media are all enamored by Laine's goal-scoring prowess... everyone worth their salt knows that an elite center has three times the opportunity to affect the 60-minute, two-way game than a winger does.

That's why Babs is quotes as saying "we're looking for Matthews to become a dominant center in this league."

GMs and coaches alike will pick Sid over Ovie and Toews over Kane every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Don't forget three times on Leap Year

Small sample size. Bars going north of the mid-line are better.

Translation: Matthews helps the team drive play in pretty much all areas of the game; Laine helps his team score a crap-ton of goals.

The light blue bar of goals, over longer samples, will generally follow the direction of the other bars.

Fancy stats aside, Laine is winning rookie of the year this season if he keeps going and nets over 40 goals.

I think that's the point, though. In all likelihood, both light blue/Actual Goals bars are going to move in the opposite direction as the season rolls on.

Lawless prefers the Jets' choice AND is down on the Leafs? Well, I never . . .
