Auston Matthews

The US development system uses the small ice system to develop their young players. It's popularity is growing and it's seen as a great tool. So much so that during Hockey Canada coaching seminars that I've been to recently, they do an entire section on it and actually use the Hockey USA presentation to do so. I expect to see the small area games/training to start emerging more in Canada over the next few years.

That's really cool! Is that presentation shareable?

Here's what I dug up. http://assets.ngin.com/attachments/document/0041/8516/Level_1_Manual_FINAL.pdf

Its hard to say that Matthews didnt have his super A game last night even though he helped on two of the goals and definitely had one great scoring chance. Two things struck me, his size, he is a lot bigger than I imagined than watching him on TV.  I would say he is second in size to The Goat (with Maracin injured that is).
What concerned me last night was his face-offs. I don't believe I saw him win one (he may have won some but I didnt see it).  I guess my only hope is that they will get him up to speed on that, or perhaps he just had a bad night on the dot.
In any case he is a superb talent and glad they could win for him at home. Nice Christmas present.

I must have missed those, so thanks for the update, must have been a lot of wins in the offensive zone in the 2nd period, hard to see there from the other end of the rink. In any case we have an enormous talent in Auston

Nice comment about the size. Watching him on TV one forgets that he is 6'3" because his hands are so good. Like a Mats or a Malkin.

He has the meat on the frame as well, skates so smoothly and can dipsy doodle as well, amazing stick handling. You can just see him becoming a totally dominating force as his career progresses.

The boxscore put him at 40% on face-offs for the night.

And he's at 45% for the season. Not particularly good but no reason, I don't think, to be concerned.

Faceoff % as rookies:

Sidney Crosby 45.4
Patrice Bergeron 49.3
Anze Kopitar 46.0
Jeff Carter 48.1
Ryan Getzlaf 43.9
Nicklas Backstrom 46.3
Claude Giroux 47.2

Basically, unless you're Jonathan Toews you're going to be under 50% as a rookie. Anyone "concerned" about it needs to take a deep breath.

The top-3 centres on the planet right now are all below 50% (Crosby: 48.0, McDavid: 44.4, Malkin: 43.1)

I really miss Joe calling the games. He was awesome.....

He still is... But i agree, he must sign with TSN or Sportsnet... or NHL center Ice can add the option to listen to the 590 AM insted of the original audio feed.

2 points behind Laine with 3 games and a period in hand. I'm not handing over the Calder to Laine just yet, thank-you.

Edit: 1pt / 1 goal behind Laine now. 3 games in hand.

And Auston's a center. Arguably twice the responsibilities of a winger. I'll take a center that does everything right over a higher scoring winger any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Noted Habs fan Andrew Berkshire on Auston Matthews.

Considering that the hype train hasn?t been as crazy as I assumed it would be at this point, I?m going to do something a little crazy and compare Matthews to Connor McDavid?s rookie year in terms of offensive impact at even strength.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/comparing-rookie-seasons-auston-matthews-connor-mcdavid/

Thanks to a few people on here who convinced me to give Berkshire more of a chance, he does a lot of good work.
