Blues/Jackets deal going down tonight?

CarltonTheBear said:
Nikitin is actually older than Russel. Age doesn't always dictate whether somebody is a prospect or not, but I wouldn't really call him a prospect anymore. He's been averaged 20 minutes a game for the Blues so far this season, 3rd highest among defencemen for St. Louis.

He's also played in less than half their games. He's only 25, so he's still technically a prospect, even if he's a long-shot, marginal one.

Well, if any GM was going to take on Tyutin's contract without sending one back, it's Garth Snow.

That one I really don't get.  I know that Columbus needed a goaltender and everything, but you give up your #2 defenseman (and a guy you clearly valued enough to sign to a big deal) for a 36 year old veteran.  Columbus is trying to get contracted.

I'm not buying it yet either... It looks like a second deal is in the works but I'd be shocked if it is as speculated.

I almost don't believe it.

I don't love the trade but if you ignore the turnaround on Tyutin I'd definitely trade him and that contract for immediate help and the added bonus of getting rid of that contract.

Yeah. Considering the extent of the failure in Columbus so far, I'd be ridding myself of as many contract that belong to non-core players as possible. Tyutin would have been very high on my list of players to move, though, not necessarily in this type of deal.

A contract that they agreed to just 3 months ago? And it's not like he's been terrible this season. I can't see the Blue Jackets actively looking to dump him.

Nabokov did not dress tonight which I guess is fueling  speculation that he's at least part of the second deal... If there is one.

That's sort of a regular occurrence though for the Islanders as they have 3 goalies who rotate in and out.

But that's why I said the thing about ignoring the turnaround. Yeah, that makes it seem a little trigger-happy but on a strict asset for asset thing with contracts figured in this is a deal I'd absolutely make.

Ah sorry, read that part wrong. If Columbus was strictly looking to dump contracts and tear things down, then yeah I could see why they would think this makes sense. But even still I don't think the value is right for them. $4.5mil isn't a terrible rate for a top-4 defenceman in the prime of his career.

The problem is something makes me think that the Blue Jackets aren't interested in tearing things down completely. And in that case I think Tyutin is a more valuable player than Nabokov right now and in the future.

I am told Tyutin is not being traded, there's NO truth to the Nabokov rumors tonight and the Russell-Nikitin trade call isn't done yet.

An explanation for those Tyutin rumours courtesy of Elliotte Friedman's 30 thoughts:

8. Those Fedor Tyutin/Evgeni Nabokov trade rumours were insane. Tyutin's part of the solution, not the problem, in Columbus. Here's what happened. After Thursday's loss to Chicago, the team asked Tyutin and Kris Russell to stick around. We all know now Russell was traded, so somebody assumed Tyutin was gone, too. The Blue Jackets actually asked Tyutin to stay in case they needed to talk to Nikita Nikitin, who they got for Russell. Nikitin doesn't speak much English.

Just interesting to see how these rumours could start.

I didn't believe it upon learning of the rumours of a Tyutin/Nabby trade.

If the Islanders record is any indication, it doesn't seem like neither a Nabokov nor a Montoya and definitely not a DiPietro can salvage the team alone.  Besides, if I were the Isles, I'd want a better deal from trading Nabokov.
