Blues vs. Maple Leafs - Nov. 2nd, 7:00pm - SN, Fan 590

Something not right with Matthews

I think he's really having a tough time adjusting to what Berube wants from everyone, including the big scorers. Matthews was great in faceoffs tonight, to be fair.

Couldn't bury chances in the first, let the Blues take over the game in the second, come out of it with another loss. Seems about right.

Hey, 4th line goal though. Maybe they should get some PP time.

You can't overcome a PP this bad. It's simply mind-boggling.
Ya but maybe send a message and leave them on the bench with the man advantage. Quit catering to them. People are blaming Savard. You have 54 million dollars on the ice and it looks like crap. 8% PP my God. It wouldn't be any worse with 3rd and 4th line out there.

I thought he had a good game. L1 and L2 had some good chances tonight. L3 is an issue.

The PP is the issue, if that's at even close to 20% there is nothing to worry about. The stars are performing disgracefully.

That being said, Reaves needs a rocket, he's not fighting and he's bad at hockey and can barely skate, watching him stop and then try to start again is genuinely beer league level.

I'm not going to freak out, I'll give them 20/30 games to figure 'Berube puck' out, but the signs early aren't good.

MLHS roasts Nylander in their game summary, and rightly sounded baffled about Matthews refusing to shoot when he and Mitch played pitch and catch.

The team is really inconsistent right now. Again, probably to be expected. They are showing consistency in exactly one area of the game, and we all know what that is.

He can't get into the lineup. I doubt we see that happen at this rate
He needs to be in the lineup and given the chance. WTH do they have to lose? PP doesn't work so give the guy with arguably the 2nd best shot on the team a chance with the skilled guys.

I like the dawg Matthews showed by defending his line mate.

The problem with the Leafs over the past 8 years is summarized with the powerplay over the past 8 months.... I believe during that time Leafs are around 32nd in the NHL: the problem is the Core4 don't work together. They just don't fit and gel.

You also would think a team with some pride, some grit and heart would not lay down and lose the games for their new coach against his old team. So this loss to me is a statement about the team's merit. St. Louis is not that good. Leafs should win 2 games based on paper, and should win based on winning for Berube. But they lose both in embarrassing fashion.... an ass kicking and then a blown lead.

Props to Lorentz. I'm just enjoying the good play when it comes this season.... but not too much indication the bad aspects of the past have changed, and definitely the core4 is intact. So nothing new to see here.

..... and i agree with the lads on this board who say put Robertson on PP1. With room to move around (like the room available in the pre-season), this guy can pot goals.

The PP needs guys who can snipe it at the net instead of dipsydoodle. It needs less Core4 (Core5) because they are the problem.... they don't work together.

The bottom line is, with Matthews not producing, the PP isn't going to be as lethal. With neither one of those producing, it's going to be tough for Toronto to win games.

What I don't understand about the powerplay is their breakout transitioning into their zone entry. The regroup/drop pass at their defensive blueline, puts the two high players at a standstill at the offensive blueline. Opposing teams simply build a wall at the offensive blueline. That makes a 6 person wall. And, because they are approaching the line with no speed, the defensive players have no need to retreat. It's like the leafs are playing Red Rover. What's most frustrating about this is there's no change being implemented at the entry. They get fancy back in their own end with some different drop passes and looks, but their zone entry remains the same.

I hate dump and chase on the PP but you have to force teams to leave that line. Dump and chase a few times and suddenly, carrying the puck in becomes easier.
