Brassard to Penguins

I won't make every trade of a player for a solid return a comment about JVR but....yeah.

I am fiercely rooting against Pittsburgh in the playoffs because I almost placed a bet on them to win the Cup back when they were out of a playoff spot and the odds were great but chickened out at the last minute.

I wonder if Pittsburgh (and potentially Tampa with Karlsson and Boston with McDonagh) loading up would make Toronto change their minds about not selling.

See I don't know if they can, because of the Marleau deal.  They probably went in to that negotiation laying out what they were going to do in an attempt to win the cup.

Why should that matter?  Marleau is signed for 3 years, if Leafs take a step back this season to be better for next season then he still has a decent shot at a Cup run with the Leafs. Even if they flat out told him they'd do everything they could to try and win the Cup this season they still don't owe him anything, he got his money.

I think the vast majority of the hockey world would say that Toronto offered him enough money there that they wouldn't need to care too much about what else he was looking for.

I just don't see it as likely that this move had much of an effect on the Leafs' game plan though. I mean, maybe if Auston ends up being out for an extended period then we have a problem but I don't see how they don't take a run at a defenseman and go with the group as is.

Yeah, if Marleau signed for 4M or less, sure, you could make an argument that they negotiated something on somewhat bad faith, but they paid him more than his production is worth.  And at this point you could make an argument that Marleau's 6M is a decent reason why JVR won't likely be with the team next year.

I assumed that trade was all about Marleau being a JvR replacement (at least 5v5)

Trade JVR, Bozak, and Komarov for futures. Use those assets or in-house assets on McDonagh. Paint it as since the group will have to make a Cup run next season without those UFAs you wanted to give them a chance to learn how to win in the playoffs without them now or something.

Is the team even worse if they add McDonagh to the defense

Rielly - McDonagh
Gardiner - Dermott
Hainsey - Zaitsev

Maybe graduate Johnson to the 3rd line + whatever NHL ready asset you got from the JVR trade that wasn't shipped for McDonagh.

The team probably comes out better in the short term let along the long term.

If you held onto Bozak and Komarov and traded JVR to Nashville for Fabbro+ and Kapanen+ to New York for McDonagh I think you can easily make the argument that the team technically comes out ahead. It's moving Bozak and Komarov that would put a pretty big ding in our bottom-6 because we'd be losing a fair amount of forward depth (unless you decide to trade Fabbro to New York instead of Kapanen).
