Brassard to Penguins

Pays to do your work ahead of the deadline, though.

Note to self on the Karlsson/Ryan potential deal too.

Does it strike anyone else as it being sort of indictment of the realities of the current CBA that a team like Vegas who, crazy as it seems, is leading the West would help out a team like Pittsburgh who figure to be a factor in the playoffs?

Just theorizing about the potential hang up here.
OTT --> VGK --> PIT

The initial paper trade still has to be legitimate: i.e. fit the cap (it should, as VGK has 7M-ish in space), fit the contract and reserve list limits (they're at 43/50 contracts and 53/90 on the reserve list), and I assume it also has to fit the roster limit (they're at 23/23 today).

So to pull this off, it can't just be 50% of Brassard's contract bouncing to Vegas temporarily for picks, before his direct flight to Pittsburgh. Ian Cole exits the Penguins lineup (as well as his cap hit), so the move is square on their end. I think there's got to be a roster move of some sort for Vegas.

Which also means Melnyk has to spend more than he thought he had to as of 3 hours ago.

I'm interested to see what Vegas gets out of this , like why help out the Pens like Nik suggests?

https://www.nhl.com/penguins/news/penguins-acquire-brassard-in-three-team-trade/c-296285780

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Derick Brassard in a three-team trade with the Ottawa Senators and Vegas Golden Knights, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

The Penguins also received a 2018 third-round draft pick and prospect forward Vincent Dunn from the Senators; and the Pens also received prospect forward Tobias Lindberg from the Golden Knights.

Pittsburgh traded defenseman Ian Cole, goalie Filip Gustavsson, a 2018 first-round draft pick and a 2019 third-round selection to the Senators.

The Penguins sent forward Ryan Reaves and a 2018 fourth-round draft pick originally acquired from Vancouver to the Golden Knights. Vegas is also retaining 40% of Brassard's salary this season.

So Vegas:

- Are eating 3 million or so in salary
- Helping out potential finals opponent

And get

- Ryan Reaves
- A pick outside the top 100

So.....score?

Yeah, not sure what Vegas gets out of this, unless there was some sort of commitment to future considerations of some kind.

Pittsburgh manages to save money on the cap this season with this deal. Cole + Reaves = $3.375M. Brassard at 60%= $3M. They save the prorated equivalent of $375K.

So, there's some speculation that Vegas played the role of intermediary here to help prevent Brassard from ending up on a Western Conference team, which is . . . something.

Something like off-the-books collusion is what it sounds like.

Vegas deliberately helped Pittsburgh land Brassard to screw Winnipeg out of landing him.

Okay?

Just read a tweet from Bobby Mac...He thinks the hold up was that Ottawa wasn't receiving anything tangible from Vegas for Brassard, so in came the Lindberg, 3rd round pick.

I really don't get this deal from Vegas' perspective. Something fishy about the whole thing and personally think the league should have revoked it.

They get a marginal NHL player in Reeves, a pick and the bonus is to keep Brassard out of Winnipeg, for 2 million.
