Auston Matthews to be named captain

I like the move and I do believe that if Auston had behaved himself in Scottsdale that he would have been Captain already. The couldn't anoint the Captaincy on a kid playing pranks. Now he is ready.

10.4% is is career low shooting percentage (all situations) for Tavares, but he did set a career high in shot attempts rate (484 in 80 GP). Mostly the issue for Tavares under Keefe is his diminished footspeed hampered his ability to chain plays to get into the OZ and maintain the puck for opportunities. A more straightforward playstyle under Berube with some heavier fetching wingers should help position him for success (low cycle + slot menace).

That's the thing, they were all prepared to name Matthews captain in 2019 before the incident broke, and Tavares knows that too. He was only keeping the seat warm in my opinion. If the Leafs had major playoffs success the last 5 years like a Stanley Cup appearance at the least, they probably wouldn't consider this move, but things being what they are, here we go.

I'm not down on Tavares at all. I agree with herman that his footspeed is slowing, but you are correct...he is integral to the team's success in the next couple years. Even if we want to call it a down year, 29 goals and 65 points is really hard to replace.

Don't they have PR people to prep these guys? Would have preferred an edited video to this presser. I guess I would like to be more fired up by Matthews getting the C.
 
I think it was a clean handoff; there should be no furtive whispering about Tavares feeling slighted by the title change. If anything, it confirmed he was not expecting to be the captain when he signed here.

Tavares was also confirmed to be an Assistant Captain for the coming season. No one else is mentioned at this time, but Rielly and Marner are in attendance if that means anything more than them being local in August.
 
I think of Bautista's retirement video. It was great and meaningful and he was on hand when it was played. There is no way the message would have come across as well without the video.

I'm not too fussed about whether there's a presser or a video or whatever. However they want to do it is good with me. If they feel this is to symbolically show that they're serious about winning and that turn over is around the corner without success then I'm all for it.
