Bruins @ Leafs - Nov. 23rd, 7:30pm - TSN4, Fan 590

A bit of a downer, but that's a-okay. The Leafs were competitive tonight, and maybe deserved a little better.

I don't get having Phaneuf man the point on a 4 on 3.  Rielly with his mobility and all the open ice....

I think we saw the reason. With that particular group there's almost no particular weapon the defense is afraid of and Phaneuf's shot can lead to good things.

I suppose you're right.  But OTOH, maybe Rielly IS the weapon of choice.

Meaning what? Like what specific attribute will he use to create a scoring chance? Because he doesn't have a great shot and if the defense isn't afraid of any of the forwards then there's really only so much movement he can create from the point. Odds are all that will happen is a lot of passing around the outside.

Totally agreed.

It's a speed game and the Leafs have two terrifically talented young skaters in Gardiner and Reilly.  They should be given more power play time IMHO.

The Leafs played really well as a team tonight (perhaps their strongest and most resilient game tonight). But they were out goaltendered.  Those goals on Reimer were soft.

Yes, Hunwick gets a B and Gardiner a C, cool story Craig Button.

I've barely watched any games all season, but from pretty much all accounts, Kadri has been the Leafs' best forward.  And Button gave him a C+...?

He's been outstanding, but ultimately is on pace for 8 goals and 36 points.

Babcock  is intent on improving the 4-on-3:

Toronto coach Mike Babcock did not fault Reimer for the Maple Leafs falling behind 2-0 in the first period.

"They got two goals early, and in fairness to [Reimer], he had been carrying us," Babcock said. "I thought our team played hard and did a good job. We had a lull after they got two, and then we got ourselves regrouped and played hard. We had a lot of chances."

The Maple Leafs have four days off before hosting the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Babcock said he would use some of the practice time to work on the 4-on-3 power play.

"I didn't think we were dangerous 4-on-3," Babcock said. "So we'll have to fix that."

I couldn't watch the game, so I only got a chance to watch replays.  What was the story on the third goal?  Did Landon Ferraro push his pad?

On the replay from the netcam, the puck was already in the net by the time Ferraro pushed Reimer's pad.

Puck was semi-stopped, sitting on edge between Reimer's left pad and left elbow. It was rolling down and into the net when Ferraro poked the pad (in an attempt to hit the puck) to expedite the process.

I don't think it was already in the net when the pad was pushed.  It was certainly falling but there was still the possibility something wacky like it getting caught between his pad and the post, when he pushes Reimer's pad it gives the puck that final drop into the net.

Looked to me like it was already behind the line and falling off before Ferraro made any contact.

Looked like the poke came from the back and to the left.

Finally found video, and I do believe you are correct.

Meaning that he has so many more options that firing it from the point like Phaneuf.  He can drive the net and create chaos.  And it's not like his shot is so bad that he can't score.

EDIT: and what Babcock said.  It was a dud and it shouldn't have been.

I think I'll give Babcock a pass on not being the first coach in NHL history to game plan his power-play around a defenseman driving to the net.
