Burke Fired

Frank E said:
I think Burke has been setting himself up for Bettman's job.

I wouldn't be surprised if he chases that job if Bettman decides to call it a career.

If Burke's brash approach is what did him in with the new owners (it was what did him in in Vancouver when ownership changed too) then having him run the NHL would be just calamity.

Bob Mccown: "I can tell you as fact that Burke was told privately if he didn't get Luongo and/or make the playoffs this year he'd be fired" (paraphrasing).

He also claims Vancouver was asking Gardiner and Kadri for Luongo :o

Yeah McCowan saying the asking price is Kadri + Gardiner for Luongo.  Time will tell if this is true or he's full of it.

I know you're paraphrasing but that strikes me as the kind of thing that can't really be "and/or". If Burke was told that he didn't get Luongo he'd be fired it's a pretty clear example of meddling where it shouldn't be. If Burke was told that he'd be fired if he didn't make the playoffs, it really just confirms what a lot of people thought about his job status.

So I think it really has to be one or the other.

If this has anything to do with the Luongo deal I'll be pretty pissed.

If it does, well then I guess it's going to be fantastic to be stuck with an overrated, overpaid goalie  ::)

Hey I want Luongo, but at the right price.  No way I'd want to give up top prospects for him and his contract.  He's worth a shot at a playoff spot for the next year or 2, but we shouldn't' mortgage the future for him.  If this was indeed about Luongo and Burke holding to his guns about not giving up a guy like Gardiner, MLSE has really screwed up today.

So the suggestion coming out is that George Cope (Bell CEO) was not a fan of Burke's style and pushed hard enough to finally get him booted. Bell culturally is certainly a very conservative company who generally don't ruffle feathers but also have no tolerance for anyone or anything that doesn't toe the line.  They also have no qualms about chopping anyone they don't want around, without mercy.

It's interesting that Burke has had this happen once before when ownership changed in Vancouver, was replaced by Nonis. Burke left a pretty well set up team for him to take over.  Nonis then acquired a goalie who took the Canucks to the next level - ironically of course being Roberto Luongo - and Vancouver eventually rose to elite contender status.

Perhaps Burke's style is just too aggressive and creates too much controversy for him to last long enough to see his rebuild work through.  In Anaheim he inherited a reasonably well built team he took over the top but only lasted about the same amount of time.

Bozak and Kadri would be A LOT to part with for Luongo and his anchor of a contract. Kadri and Gardiner would get Nonis fired next and make the Leafs the joke of the league, if they're not already after today's impromptu announcement.

Yeah, I said "and/or" because I couldn't remember exactly what he said. I think the basic message he was parlaying was that Burke was told he's be gone if he doesn't get Luongo or at least make the playoffs.

This makes me think the Burke firing was not about Luongo. Surely any sane person would realize that's too much. Hell, even one of them would be too much.

I think it could cost one of Kadri or Gardiner but not both, probably a Bozak and probably one stinko contract like Komisarek's or Connolly.

I would of course rather not part with Gardiner, but I think I can live with it.

A plug and a guy who can't crack one of the worst rosters in the league is not a lot to give up for a top 10 goalie with lots of game left in his tank.

...who has virtually no value because of his contract.

I don't think we need time to tell anything. When it comes to the Leafs, more often than not, McCowan has been full of it. I put absolutely zero stock in what he says.

Yep.  Just tune him out when he starts talking Maple Leafs.

I can also live with him being overpaid and overrated if we didn't give up much for him; he's still a decent #1 goalie. But the thing is I don't see a deal happening between Toronto/Vancouver unless we are giving up such prospects. I don't think the Leafs will get him for a steal.
