Burke Fired

Simmons is now in full defense mode on twitter, saying he thinks he gets hit by telling the truth. No Steve, people don't like you because you are a jackass.

It's pretty funny to watch him squirm when he get's hit like that. The TRUTH hurts, doesn't it, Steve?

It took Simmons over an hour to come up with this nugget...

"Burke likes truculence. Just not from sports writers."

Wooow Steve. Brilliant.  I bet he wiped away the tears in his eyes long enough to tweet that from a bathroom stall somewhere in the ACC.

Yes, because when we hear the word Truculence, we immediately think of Steve freakin' Simmons!

It wasn't truculence, it was an idiotic, unanswerable question.

Has Fratten not made the most dramatic rise since that meeting of just about any athlete in sports?

You...you mean the guy who had 15 points in 56 games on the third line of a bad hockey team last year? No. No, I think there have been slightly more dramatic rises.

Agreed.  It's Jake Gardiner.

Jake Gardiner has had the most recent most dramatic rise of any athlete in all of sports, since a meeting.

I can't see anyone having a problem with him taking Simmons down.

However at least twice he answered a question with "That's not my problem now" which comes across as petulant. And one of the questions was how to recognize the fans coming out of the lockout.

In fairness to Burke, that was an incredibly stupid question. "Hey, guy who doesn't work here anymore, what are the company's future plans?"

The Simmons thing was funny though. Frankly, Burke's abuse of the idiot media was way more entertaining to me than anything most of those guys write. Smart people asked smart questions and got some very good and candid answers. Morons asked stupid questions and got jerk answers.

I agree the questions were stupid but there are better ways of answering them. And, hey, he still is a senior advisor  ;)

As for Simmons and the idiot media, I agree. That was the best part of his tenure.

Has to be totally personality thing with Burke otherwise like people have suggested they would have fired Nonis too if it had anything to do with hockey.

I don't think that follows. They need to keep the team in competent hands. Nonis was the #2 guy but that's a far sight from being tied to every decision your boss makes.

On a follow up to my earlier statement and I do thank Nik Pollock for his response, I agree Jake Gardner is the better prospect at this point, but what I was saying is Frattin raised himself out of the ashes after Burkies visit and that transformation is great, but Jake was not at the bottom of the barrel throwing washing machine of campus dorms whilst pissed out of his mind.
I do believe Frattin has the ability to be a game changing player and I credit JFJ for the draft but more to Burke for the resurrection of Matts future.

No, I understood it. He was irresponsible, he got his stuff together. That does not make for the most dramatic rise in sports.

As the dust now begins to settle, I'm wondering how/why Cox got the exclusive interview yesterday... Burke could have given it to anyone and IIRC, Cox wasn't exactly kind to Burke in the beginning. Was it his less-antagonistic writing of late? Did Burke figure Cox had the biggest audience? I really don't know... It's just a question that popped into my head.

I heard Burke on The McCowan prime time sports radio show last year and him and Cox were always kissing up to Burke while he was on.  They'd totally rip his moves when he wasn't around, but interviewing him they were always soft as marshmallows.

I didn't see the press conference today but from the thread I would say I line up with Zee on this one.  Burke had the biggest GM position in hockey, and wants to be a GM again.  Regardless of what the RPB types want, you don't stoop to the level of some hack on a tabloid.  You just drive them crazy by never losing your cool.

Burke 1:1 with James Duthie

A lot of this was similar answers to most of what he's said with a few new gems thrown in.  At the end of this I just kind of think... Burkie you do need a break.  Probably a long one.

I really don't think he's been the same since the loss of his son.  I don't know how anyone could be the same after losing a child.  You see the tears in his eyes at the end and just wish the guy some peace.

Hopefully the last word on the matter, from the man himself:

"I can stand here and say 'oh, they didn't like my personality,' but those all become pretexts and excuses later. If you win enough games you can be as obnoxious as you want to be," said Burke.

Okay hindsight is 20/20.  But if people are going to rake Burke over the coals for his deals or lack of deals to fill holes on the roster... let's ponder what would happen if:
  • J.F.J. takes Claude Giroux instead of Tlusty.
  • J.F.J. doesn't deal picks for Toskala and Mark Bell.

Does Burke make the Kessel trade with Giroux on the roster?
If the Sharks could deal those picks the Leafs gave up for
Logan Couture, what's saying Brian Burke couldn't as well??

Okay, who knows what would of happened.  But perhaps Burke
doesn't trade for Kessel, doesn't sign Bozak and Connolly.

There's nothing to say the Leafs top two lines couldn't be very
similiar to:
Joffrey Lupul / Tyler Seguin / Claude Giroux
Logan Couture / Grabovski / Nikolai Kulemin
(Plus having Dougie Hamilton and Jared Knight)

Whatever the outcome, I think JFJ's poor performance not only destroyed
the Leafs not only on his tenure, but left it in shambles for Burke as well.
This isn't even factoring (re)signing guys like: Domi, Belfour, Allison, O'Neil,
Lindros, Tucker (still on buy-out), Blake, McCabe... or trading away Rask.

People are disappointed the Leafs didn't make the playoffs?  Burke went
right into hockey hades and saved the soul of this club.  Not sure anyone
else could of done it.  How many would of bent to the pressure?  Signed
some stupid contract and left this club for dead just like Burke's predecessor did.
