Burke Fired

sickbeast said:
Do we have a reason yet as to why he was fired?  The way the team is playing, it's making it look as though he actually did a pretty good job, aside from Kessel.

We're never going to get anything more concrete than the official reasons we've already been given - that the new ownership wanted to go a new direction and wasn't comfortable with his management style.

I'll admit it: I kind of miss the guy.

I think eventually we will get more, but it'll be at some point in the future and nobody will really care.  Someone will write a book I think.

Burke is apparently going to be on the Sportsnet pre-game show at 6:30 tonight.  For those who missed the regular dose of bluster.  Knowing the way these things usually go, he probably drops some crazy nugget of info.

Oh, I'm sure we'll get other stories, but that doesn't mean any of them are true.

So Burke is going to be at the game strictly on behalf of USA hockey? Interesting.

That should answer any questions anyone had about this advisor position.

I still miss Quinn.

I don't miss Burke.  I don't miss Wilson.

I kind of miss Maurice in that, he actually looked heartbroken when the Leafs were getting beaten up kind of way.  He was a guy who I always felt took home each defeat as a personal failure.

I certainly miss Quinn because I liked him.  He supported the team in the media (but would call guys out at times too) and he would stand up for his players and the team.

I don't like the bombastic approach of a guy like Burke because he would talk more than his actions.

So if someone said nothing that would make a difference?

Still early but this 8-5 team is still completely Burke's. Take away a couple of his mistakes i.e. Connolly and Komisarek (which one way or another we have) this is a pretty fun team to watch. While there are a couple holes (namely a number one center) there are a number of pieces here worth being charged about I think... Even if we weren't 8-5.

The question that we'll never have answered is "would this lineup look the same with Burke as GM"?  Does Burke demote Connolly, get rid of Lombardi, get behind the callups of Kotska, Fraser, Holzer?  Who knows?

I think the Lombardi trade still happens, I heard Maloney say on TSN radio that he was working on that deal with Burke before the firing.

It's also very much the type of move Burke likes to make for veteran guys that don't have a place on his teams. When he can and it's not detrimental to his team, he'll try to make moves to find those guys places to play where they can be successful.

Aside from Lombardi, those are all coaching decisions you've listed.

I will say, it's refreshing not having to hear Burke at least once a week and that the focus is solely on the team.

Coaching decisions aren't made in a vacuum.  The GM would have input on player call ups/demotions.
