"Phil's problem is he's two weeks on two weeks off ...you can't rely on Phil ... That's the nature of the beast." -Ron Wilson on #Leafslunch

What a prick

Is he that wrong though?

He reminds me of Mogilny that way - when he wants to dominate you can't stop him, otherwise, he's useless.

In other words, they're streaky like almost all non-generational-talent scorers.

No, and I think it's important in that it frames the discussion around Kessel where it should be where he's put in that sort of context vs. the kinds of guys who might not be as great at putting up point totals but who are contributing more game-in and game-out without scoring.

Some context is helpful. It's really not as bad as that snipe quote makes it seem:

Hope_Smoke: Wilson "I think you can win with Kessel. He shows obvious signs of brilliance throughout the year"

Hope_Smoke: Wilson "Phil's problem & I think it's pretty much how Phil's been his whole career is two weeks on & two weeks off"

Hope_Smoke: Wilson "you can't rely on Phil. It's just the way he is. Comes & goes & he gets emotional. It effects his game & relationship with players"

Hope_Smoke: Wilson "I kind of think, the proof is in the pudding. Phil's very emotional. When things are going great everyone loves playing with him..."

Hope_Smoke: Wilson "... & when he isn't playing great he's a hard guy to get on board on your side."

Hope_Smoke: Wilson "I guess Phil's been in this funk for a couple of weeks, so he'll snap out of it soon & the Leafs will be better for it"

I'd say that's probably a pretty fair assessment.

I listened to the interview on Leaf's Lunch.  When they said he was coming up I was expecting him to be angry and spitting venom, but he sounded a little somber and was quite honest.  It was a pretty good interview.

Well my issue is it's always been a disproportionate amount of criticism attributed to him for the Leafs failings. I think coaching is easily number one. All goal scorers are, to some extent, streaky. Why is Kessel always singled out in this way?

It also seems like Wilson's a bit of a cheap shot artist. He only pokes his head out when there's some controversial stuff going on and makes proclamations from a safe distance.

They're similar in a lot of ways. Mogilny was also a pretty terrible defensive player early in his career, and it wasn't really until he ended up with the Devils that he really started to understand that part of the game - and, from there, he became a very good defensive forward. I could definitely see Kessel having a similar experience under the right circumstances.

This gave me a much needed laugh:

Bernier on Carlyle firing: He was a good President, South Africa owes him a lot, a great humanitarian. Sorry to see him go like that.

Or the media is only interested in what he has to say when there's something controversial going on. I'm sure Wilson has a lot to say at other times, but, if no one is there to listen and/or broadcast it, how are we to know?

So, I am not sure how to read the posts in this tread. Yes I understand that we are all happy with Randy being gone. But after reading through the posts, I am under the impression that most of you want to blow the whole team, and play for the draft? I for one want the team to make the playoffs. I hope this is not just me. Realistically if the team plays at the same rate as the first half, they will make the playoffs.

I hope they still make a run for it too.  Seems like a bad sign that they're going with the assistant coaches to run things though...i would have thought if they were still looking to make a decent run at it they'd have had to pick up a head coach

There was a quote from Barry Trotz I believe who said that he thinks Spott has what it takes to be a head coach.

well perhaps he'll get a chance to show it.  I just think the optics of not giving the job to an established name are bad in a city that can still remember JFJ as GM  ..the first sign of something going wrong and it's panic ..or perhaps more so

Feschuk's scum.  Good on Phil to bust out of his shell and put this piece of crap in his place.
