Coach Mike Babcock

I assume the Leafs can re-coup the draft pick through any one of the trades of Kessel, Phaneuf, Bozak etc.

Or even by getting compensation of their own by targeting coaches like Boucher/Keefe and having other teams poach them after a year or two.

One thing is for certain, if you don't play the new systems to a T, you won't be a Marlie or Leaf for very long.
Makew it more likely we have seen the end of the Phil and Tyler B. show

Or by having Carlyle signed by another team??  ::)

Does anyone else think this might hurt the rebuild?

I'd say the long term nature of the deal seems to suggest that there is time for failure built in here.  I know just because a coach is hired for a length of time doesn't mean they'll be on that team that long ...but 8 years seems like an attempt to say we expect this might not be an over night thing.  I also think that having someone of Babcock's stature being the coach could buy a little bit of extra time with the fans at large.  Because let's face it there are going to be some times durning these next 2 or 3 seasons where we'll be sick of losing.

So no I guess I see this as a positive for the rebuild.

I said this elsewhere but not in the sense that Babcock's amazing coaching skills will make the team significantly better than they otherwise would be. Coaching just doesn't work that way.

An argument could be made that Babcock himself might not be as open to the concept of a rebuild as Shanahan might but...honestly, I think that sort of thing would be hashed out in meetings well before they got to this stage.

I have to say that one of my favourite things about Babcock is that when I was looking for pictures for my new little AV there, all I could find were pictures of him scowling and pictures of him smiling. The best part? The ones with him scowling are intimidating, the ones with him smiling are downright terrifying.

I had resigned myself earlier this week to believing that Babcock wouldn't want to deal with this trainwreck, even at $6M. But now I am pleasantly surprised, but will refrain from hyping this up anymore than it already has.

I wonder if some players suddenly become 'good' now.

Is the 3rd Round pick that goes to Detroit as compensation for the signing a 2015 or 2016 pick? The Leafs are already without a 2nd Round pick from the Bernier trade which would leave a big hole between rounds 1 and 4 in a supposedly deep draft.

They can give up the pick in any of the next 3 drafts.

Do you know if it has to be their own pick, like offersheets?

I'm 99% sure it does, yeah. In situations like this, where the compensation is spelled out specifically in the rule, it generally has to the team's own.

That, and the length of the contract also strongly implies that Babcock and the team aren't looking at a short-term turnaround, but, rather, they're in it for the long-haul. Babcock's presence may change some of the specifics, but it doesn't change the overall vision or plan.
