Coronavirus

It's interesting seeing the varying degrees of mask wearing.

Was curious about the kids' school and how many kids and teachers were still wearing a mask.  They said that literally only a handful of kids were not wearing a mask at this point.  All teachers were.  I just saw one secretary who wasn't.  Talked to a few friends about their kids' schools, and they said it's roughly 50/50.

Went to Costco last week, and I'd say the split was 60/40 in favour of those wearing masks.  The other grocery stores I've been to as well as the hockey arena and soccer field the kids play in I'd say it's closer to 70/30 of those who don't.

My kids said to me almost every teacher stopped wearing a mask and kids was about 50/50.

I'm working ER today.  80% of my visits are for respiratory illness.  Most of it is likely not COVID but the lack of capacity to cope with minor illness is absurd.

Hooray though, you didn't have to wear your F'ng mask in Walmart though.
I mean I get that every little bit helps, but does masking in a mall voluntarily matter when kids are going to school unmasked and people can indoor dine, bars, clubs unmasked? Just feels like once you drop the law for all places of congregation that people not voluntarily wearing masks while shopping isn't the biggest issue.

It is kinda bizarre that everyone decided well if the law says I can do it then I should do it. Individuals are bad at assessing health risk.

What we have seen over and over again is that people are bad at making good health decisions when they affect other people.  If they affect themselves they are more likely to engage in the defensive behaviour but if they are thinking of others they don't care as much.

My daughter said last week, that by the second day, only herself and two others were wearing a mask. She said teachers are about 50/50. My wife who is a principal at another school has asked her staff to consider continuing to wear their masks to support the students that have chosen to keep theirs on. She said that all but one teacher have kept their masks on. It's funny how leadership can effect an organization.

So true. My sons school the principal & head secretary not wearing masks. Thank goodness his class of grade 8s only 2 kids not wearing masks. Everyone else including teacher all wearing.

For the most part, the majority of places I?ve gone too the majority of people are wearing masks. The hockey rinks are another story. 😔 like 70% not wearing masks. My son continues to wear his & hockey Canada did send out an email that masks are to be worn inside dressing rooms & on the benches by coaching staff. Most are doing it.

Anyways, I have no desire to stop wearing mine & will continue to do so for quite some time.

Stay safe everyone.

I'm mostly wearing mine. I've enjoyed not having a cold, influenza, and so on for the last two years.

Not wearing masks in school is going to be a germ factory for all manner of plagues.

One teacher at the kids' school admitted to me in confidence that he had a student in his class who had tested positive.  Four others were also missing.  Didn't know if it was coincidence or not.  But that too he admitted he wasn't surprise because they were the ones not wearing a mask, along with the fact he knows at least a few of them are the unvaccinated ones.

Found out this morning one of my oldest daughter's closest friends tested positive, picked up from school.  My wife's close friend said her daughter too tested positive.  From school as well.

So it's swirling out there.

Went to a small dinner party with neighbours on Saturday, just 6 of us.  The other 4 tested positive for Covid and my nose is running like a faucet for a day now.  Going to get tested this AM.
2 years we have been so vigilant and now this, just glad we are double vaccinated and boosted.

I'm doing some work in Burlington for the week. I can confidently tell you that Southern Ontario, or at least the neighbourhoods I've been in, are masking far more than what I've seen in Sudbury. I went through a home depot and a canadian tire here and I'd say 75% are wearing masks. In Sudbury, you'd be lucky to count 1 in 4.

Well, I'm positive! Had stuffed nose for 6 or 7 days and did a second test yesterday and got the double line. Ah well.

Get well soon, Bender.

Early studies (and hospital tracking) on Omicron BA.2 are showing some GI symptoms (vomiting, nausea, diarrhea) in addition to, or in lieu of the usual respiratory ones. Wondering about that stomach bug that the Leafs went through back in Feb...

Any other symptoms Bender?  My nose is running and a bit of chest congestion but overall I feel pretty OK so far.

Get well soon too, Highlander. Are you all double vaccinated and boosted?

So we?re in the fingers in the ears ?lalalalala I don?t hear you? phase it seems.

To that, she said, Moore is "doing his job" assessing COVID-19 indicators and that "it's good news" that he isn't holding regular updates because "we're now at a stage where the peak of the pandemic has passed us."

"We need to get on with our lives and learn to live with COVID as it still exists with us," she said.

I don't disagree with the mindset of learning to live with COVID at this point.

But geez, talk about poor optics.  Cautious cautious cautious, then all of a sudden complete 180 making it a free-for-all with no care.  Just like that.  Telling a school board they are not allowed to extend the mask policy at their request was/is pathetic.

I?m sorry I disagree. I don?t want to learn to live with it. Then why did we take all these precautions for 2 years? We could have just learned to live with it back then if that was the case.

All they had to do was leave masks in place. That?s it. Drop everything else, I don?t care, but the masks would help prevent so many infections. And you get the added bonus of not getting the common cold either.

Anyway, I?m super pissed about this if you can?t tell and I?m probably not the best person to have a rational discussion on this subject.

I get that you are annoyed. But the answer to the above is that because the variant of Covid that exists today in the general population is very different than the original or Delta. And further we are 90% vaccinated as well. I'm not necessarily saying the no mask mandate is the right answer. But we are in a starkly different world today than we were two years ago.

That?s fine. All I?m asking for us keep mask mandates in place. Drop vaccine passports, fine.

I?m just saying that personally, I?m not going to restaurants or movies anymore, and I?m really reluctant to go to Jays games now. But I know I?m in the minority but I?m going to continue to be super careful on my own.
