Dave Bolland

the fact that he has just gotten off crutches recently is not a good sign.

I though the reports of him being off crutches came nearly 3 weeks ago.

Yeah. That feels like old news to me.

EDIT: He was reported as being seen off crutches on the 14th, and is expected to be back on the ice in some capacity in the next week or two.

What are you actually saying? The Leafs think he'll be a decent two-way centre with leadership skills?

The problem I have with Bolland is that he ISN'T a good center at all.  In the playoffs he FO% was between 25% and 35%.  The last 4 of the 5 games before injured his FO% were 40% Van, 40% Cal, 27.8% Edm, 20% Clb. He seem to luck out against Pittsburgh.

You can't really judge a guy as being a good centre or not based on a small sample size of bad faceoff % results, especially when he has a long, successful track record before coming to Toronto as a centre on a contending team that won two cups.

I guess I equate success as a center with as one who is successful on the FO dot.  When he has been consistently beaten every year at faceoffs but has been a great player, I call that a good forward and lousy center man.  From my point of view for the last few years though....he has been brutal winning faceoffs which I believe hurts a team regarding puck possession.

I think you're overvaluing face-offs.  There is so much more to being a good C than face-offs.  C's have some of the most demanding defensive responsibilities of any player on the ice.

Coming along....

I'd say another 2-3 weeks by the looks of that clip.

Good to see him doing stop-starts.  They showed a clip of him doing it a while ago and he looked really pained each time he did it.  I really hope they don't try and put him in a game prior to the Olympic break.  It might be ok to try and get him to the AHL for a rehab game or two just before they come back though.

That's good.  2-3 weeks puts us into the Olympic break, hopefully he's ready to go when they get back at it Feb 27th, that's exactly one month from now.

The Olympic break is less than 2 weeks away, so, it's probably unlikely he's comfortable enough to play by then. That being said, the Marlies have a fairly light schedule through the break, thanks to the AHL All-Star game, so, he wouldn't really be able to get much of a rehab stint going until the last week coming out of the Olympics, which is probably ideal. That would give him about 3 weeks until he starts to see game action, and then 4 or 5 games with the Marlies before the Leafs play the Islanders at the end of the February.

The question is how effective will he be?  I heard somebody say on HNIC that Karlsson is only now feeling normal.

Different players, different roles, etc. Karlsson gets a lot more ice time and his game depends on a lot more on speed than Bolland's. He's putting more pressure on what was reportedly a more severe injury. Obviously Bolland won't be at 100%, but, I imagine he'll get there faster than Karlsson.

I am hoping but I will not hold my breath, I have heard several reports which state dont expect him back this season.

That makes sense.

It's also a relative thing.  Karlsson feeling 100% could have been entirely mental.  We don't know that his strength/ROM/endurance wasn't exactly where it should be.  If he was playing cautious because he was concerned about reinjuring himself, that might have been what was holding him back.

Bolland could be in a completely different territory.  Initial reports made it seem like he had a slightly less involved injury.  That being said, I would have expected him to be walking around a little sooner if that was the case.  He looked pretty decent on the ice though in that video but again, a lot of any rehabilitation is about getting yourself back to 100% in your head as much as from a direct physical standpoint.

Bolland skating with the team this morning.  As Rob Ford would say, "folks, he's close"

Yeah, but, if Rob Ford said it, it likely wouldn't be true.

You've just added another layer of complexity onto this story.

Even if it carried a Jamaican accent?
