Dave Bolland

I like Dave Bolland, he can bring great leadership to a team. I dont want him to sign here. I dont think he is worth 4+ mil a season. But this is just me. In the very near future that is going to be the going rate for a 3rd line center throughout the league.

My initial comment was more in response to some just assuming that he's more or less done as a player, which isn't clear yet.

Since the line of discussion the quote a part of is missing something pretty basic, thought experiment: say his injury is completely healed or it never happened. Would you pay $5m for that? $4m? -- it's not like the team doesn't have other holes to throw that money into.

I would think so, for starting at 4 million, but I wouldn't pay him 5 million personally. I guess you could start at 10% over the 3.3 million he earned this season, but we both know that UFA status adds a bunch right off the hop and that wouldn't get it done.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie  4m
David Bolland's initial ask of TOR was 7 or 8 yr deal worth shade under $5M per year. If TOR counters it will be for shorter term/lower AAV.

Nonis should have told his agent to leave the room and never come back.

It's just a negotiation strategy. No one is giving Bolland that contract.

From Damien Cox.....Talks between Leafs and C David Bolland not looking good. If he leaves, could have approx $25m to spend on a half dozen players.

I think that there's a difference between coming in with a high offer and being just completely delusional.

I agree. But that just sounds like an extremely high starting place to me.

Somebody is definitely high in that room.

Gee, a re-leak of a wild contract demand right when the negotiation window to all teams opens.. colour me shocked.

Why not shoot for it? He's got this chance to see what comes rolling in and take it back to the Leafs (or Chicago, more likely, IMO) and see what their response is.

For now, everybody take your pills and calm down.

HeyMyNameIsWill: McKenzie: "The Leafs and Bolland are not close. The Leafs are looking to get Bolland for 5-6 years at close to $4.25M per."

Umm . . . that's not really that much better than what Bolland is asking for. In fact, I wouldn't categorize the difference there as not close. That's way too close for comfort.

You've brought this up on a few occasions. There's no way Chicago brings him back. If they do I'll change my name to CFwasRight for a week.

What the heck? Why didn't the Leafs offer him a 1-year deal worth $550k? I mean what's the harm?

I think you're pretty safe. Without making a move, the Hawks just don't have the cap space to offer Bolland a contract anywhere near what he's asking for right now and fill out their roster. Coming into free agency with less than $5M in cap space, I actually don't expect the Hawks to do much more than add a couple depth players. Somewhere like Florida or the Islanders are much more likely landing spots. Chicago is down near the bottom of the list of places Bolland will end up.

I think they'll be looking to clear up a bit of cap space and bring in a 2C. That just won't be Bolland.

There was some talk that Sharp and his 5.9M cap hit is on the market.

Can somebody break Nonis' fingers? Can he possibly be looking to sign a guy for 5-6 years right after a career-threatening injury? I just can't fathom how any GM would even consider that.

My guess on Bolland is that they agreed to come back to the table closer to the start of free agency. I'd even go as far as to say that the Leafs are already talking to Stastny's agent to see about the possibility of offering more than Colorado's internal structure dictates.

I like that teams and players can shop around for 5 days, it makes things interesting.

I'd like that to be the case. The next week or so should answer a ton of questions as to what Shanahan has in store as Leaf president. Right now its all a mystery wrapped in a riddle.  ???

If they move Sharp, it would be to get better cap flexibility, not take on an equally bad contract on an inferior player.
