Dealing with Last Night's Loss

I'm just glad I can get on with my life now... that's the only positive I can take from this.

I guess this is what Ottawa fans felt like all those times the leafs ereased their leads and won the series.

I'm still not upset. What's done is done, Boston is a superior team. If anything, Boston should look at themselves for letting a 3-1 series lead get to game 7 OT...

What I'm more annoyed at are all the bashers that I have to deal with. Already I've gotten about 10 emails from coworkers on this. I don't understand why it's ok to just bash like that... I never do that to fans of other teams...

Immaturity.  Both my dad and sister are Habs fans and both called me to say how sorry they were last night that the Leafs lost.  Not even because they are family but just because they are fans that know what it feels like to lose and also, they have maturity and respect.

Just you wait. At some point someone's going to get the joke and I will be hailed as an internet hero.

My only real question is this: from where do you draw your inspiration.  It's a work of art, really.

I believe it was the great John Lennon who said that genius is pain.

As the great philosophers Aerosmith once said,

"Everybody's got their dues in life to pay."  and

"You gotta lose to know how to win."

Of course, saying this doesn't matter much in the big scheme of things is true.  It's also beside the point.  We invest a lot of time in this sport, this team, for many reasons, but probably most primal of all to fulfill a sense of belonging to a tribe.  A powerful human emotion.  And the tribe becomes an extension of our selves, so when disappointments happen, we are naturally going to feel disappointed.

The sad thing for me is that the highs of winning never last as long as the lows of losing.

Still, if I never invested anything emotionally in anything optional, life would be pretty vanilla.

Cheers to you all for another fun season of posting.  And it was fun, more fun than any in many a year.  I hope that next year brings more of the same.

At some point, I bet 95% of NHL captains play in a series where they and/or their team don't perform up to their abilities.

And, really, like 99.99% of young players never even make the NHL.

I'm holding out hope that we can do what tyey the 2010 Bruins did and come back stronger.

My wife became a pretty big Hockey and Leafs fan when we got married, she has barely missed a game and last night was absolutely crushing for her, I found myself being the one with some perspective, it is after all just a game and next year is another chance.

Agreed. People that haven't watched an entire hockey game in their lives suddenly become experts on why the Leafs suck.  ::)

Next up: the inevitable autopsy we'll be forced to endure all summer long, with continuous replays of that horrendous collapse on TV.

Isn't it fun being a Leaf fan? ;)

Next season can't come soon enough.

I still feel sick. Sorry, I know it's just a game but I'm not handling it as well as I'd like to.  :-\

Nor am I, but look at it this way we took a big step, and served notice to the NHL that the Leafs are back.

The Leafs are back and they're samer than ever.

I read "Pigeon wants a puppy" and "The Ghost Library" to my 4-year-old during overtime.  That really made everything okay.

15 playoff teams will end their season with a loss.  "Good" losses and "bad" losses.  This was a very bad loss, for sure, but I'm thrilled the Leafs didn't go out like Vancouver, or Montreal, or Washington.  They played one bad game and a few bad periods (and one really, really bad period).  Frattin scores on the breakaway and it's on to Round 2.  Oh well, so it goes.  They exceeded my expectations in virtually all regards, except they didn't win the Stanley Cup, which exactly met my (and everyone's) expectation.  I give it an Owen Nolan "boo hoo" and move on.

I mean this in all possible good and bad ways:  If you can't handle disappointment, you're cheering for the wrong team.

In the immortal words of Queens of the Stone Age, sometimes the same is different.
