Don Cherry fired by Sportsnet

Sooner or later, and I think it's almost certainly sooner, someone at Sportsnet is really going to have to answer whether "Do Immigrants buy enough poppies?" is the conversation they want their hockey broadcasts to start.

Hide the evidence!

I don?t know why everyone is upset.  The poppy clearly is a symbol that recognizes Canada?s willingness to have closed borders and focus on Canada first and has absolutely nothing to do with helping our neighbours around the world.

It is still especially funny that Cherry is spouting this stuff on the National network.

They also presumably added "Don will face zero repercussions for spouting racist nonsense on national television".

Quite the backlash today from all corners. Interesting to see if anything comes of it outside of this token statement

Statements from Sportsnet and the NHL. Nothing yet from Cherry or MacLean.

I'm not quite sure where this thread fits on here so my apologies if I have put it in the wrong forum.  I kind of feel that he gets a lot of discussion on here in various ways so he kind of deserves his own thread.

There is quite the firestorm right now about his anti immigrant comments last night on coach's corner.  I have to say that I'm really disappointed in him, personally.  His remembrance day shows have always been what I have admired most about him and now he has seriously tainted his legacy.  It's a real shame.  He probably doesn't have much time left before he rides off into the sunset.  It's hard to watch him go out like this.

Someone just pointed this out to me but this apology was not tweeted by Sportsnet's main account that has 700k followers but by SportsnetPR, who has just over 8,000.

They did retweet it from their main account, though.

I wonder how the Royal Canadian Legion feels about it since he was proudly displaying their crest on his jacket as he was spewing his garbage. That is exactly not the sort of message I imagine they'd want to be sending at this time of year.

EDIT: good thing someone with ties to the CBC has a somewhat more rational point of view.

Contrary to Don Cherry?s assertion that fewer people are wearing poppies nowadays, I can honestly say quite the opposite is true.

Don?t know where this guy gets his facts from but all he?s spewing out is simply more hate rather than brotherly love and a disrespect to those who serve.  Save your breath Don.  Your talk sounds very un-Canadian.

It really is disheartening to see how many people, whether it's politicians or HNIC employees or whoever, respond to this issue with "Nuh uh, Don Cherry, we love the troops times a billion" as opposed to, you know, questioning what right a moron like Cherry gets to dictate what constitutes being Canadian to anyone.

Warmington is the columnist Cherry spoke with in the aftermath of his Coach's Corner mess to reaffirm he was making no apologies for his remarks. Warmington is staunchly TeamCherry.

John Shannon and Ken Campbell have said the same thing.

I was skeptical when it was just Joe. Some people thought he may have just been duped by a fake tweet (he is an idiot after all). But 3 people...

This was really a brave choice on Sportsnet's part. Cherry's very popular but racism has no place on a hockey broadcast. Maybe that stuff would have been ok in the past but not now in 2003.

Well, it's still not a confidence-inspiring list... but given who this is about, I can kind of see the sources lining up in this area of the mediasphere.

Hey, Bob McKenzie, you awake?

Those would be three fairly big reporters to tweet out something without being pretty sure of their sources but I will believe it when I see it for sure.
