Don Cherry fired by Sportsnet

Ok this is getting a little closer to feeling confirmed.

I was going to say that I wondered if a decision had been made but that they wanted to wait until after today to do it.

Kind of wild though. As much as I think it's overdue, I legitimately have never watched HNIC without Cherry on Coach's Corner in my life. End of an era, I guess.

I can only assume that they asked him to resign, and he refused.

Honestly? I would be shocked if that were true. I bet they just asked him to apologize and he refused which led them to this.

I think my favourite moment was when he weirdly kissed Kadri.

That's true. Never thought of it until you mentioned it. I don't think Sportsnet has a choice in this case.

They made a mistake by re-signing him last summer, when it was clear his best before date was long expired. I wish Don nothing but the best by the way.  He is from another era, which I call he Dinosaur age. And it wasn't that long ago.

You just can't say what you mean anymore.  Politically correct is the only correct, kind of scary actually.

I genuinely wonder when it is people think that a hockey commentator could say whatever he wanted without consequence.  If anything, back in the day, broadcasts would have been more tightly controlled to make sure that the people on it talked about, you know, hockey.

So, like, what are the odds Cherry runs for the head of the Conservative Party next?
I would have pegged him as more of a PPC guy...

You clearly don't understand it, do you?
I think I understand what he's saying.
It's no longer acceptable to unleash your inner Archie Bunker?

What do you think the venn diagram for Don Cherry fans and people who shout "stick to sports" looks like?

Snowflakes

A Play in One Act by Nik Bethune

(Enter Stage Right, a Don Cherry-type figure)

Don Cherry: Not enough of you are wearing a patriotic symbol. By not wearing this symbol that I prize so greatly, you are being disrespectful to this country. If you don't display sufficient patriotism in the specific manner I approve of, you're not a good enough Canadian and don't cherish the liberties our veterans died for.

(Enter Stage Left, a Man wearing a suit)

Suit: Hey Don, you're fired.

Don Cherry: But what about my freedom of expression?

(Fin)

I will now be accepting A+ grades for my thorough mastery of the concept of dramatic irony.
