Ducks vs. Maple Leafs - Jan. 3rd, 9:00pm - SN, Fan 590

Is there anything more fitting than winning off a knucklepuck against the Ducks?

In the post game scrum, Jones said they told him he'd be playing Anaheim the night before - after the LA game.

3 straight games without a 5-on-5 goal allowed now. Prior to this they hadn't even done that in back to back games yet this season (although got close with a 0-1-0 stretch in late October).

I want to see the CSA stats from this game, because the gaudy shot numbers sort of mask that the Leafs weren't particularly hard on Dostal. Aside from Lyubushkin's goal line save, Dostal saw pretty much every shot leading up to Rielly's power play ping. On the opposing end, Jones had to come up with aggressive, but still positional saves off counter-attack rushes and the handful of OZ cycles the Ducks were able to get against Domi and at the tail end of Matthews shifts off turnovers.

The Leafs approach to this game is pretty similar to how Carolina traditionally plays: straight up into the OZ with 3 wide, and then just fire from anywhere, hunt down the puck to reload, and do it again. While the Ducks skaters did not have a good time, they did help their goalie see pretty much everything and he made additional good reads to take away tighter looks (Nylander tried for the shortside shoulder corner 3 times).

Previous iterations of Keefe-Leafs, facing a 5-man clog in the slot, would've tried to Marner every OZ sequence: passing around the perimeter looking for a backdoor seam pass (leading to a breakaway on our cold goalie). This time, even Marner eschewed his natural inclinations and got with the program.

Domi?does not have a clue

That was horrible way worse than the Kampf benching. Consequences we'll see.

I didn't see the game, but I see he had the lowest time on ice except for McMann and Holmberg (by a few seconds.) I won't be surprised if he sits.

He only had 3 shifts in the 3rd period, which is a especially noteworthy since the team needed a goal and he's one of the better point producers. Very well might not have played at all had McMann not been booted from the game. So a message was sent.

Thank you Matty. Deserving of the win and I liked Zebras and the Anaheim bench acknowledging the work of Dostal who was the only reason they got a point. Would have been disappointing losing this.

You gotta be pretty happy with last two, yes?  Dominated skills-wise and physically.

As long as they play hard each night that's all you can ask. It's the games where they disappear especially the core that's frustrating. Limiting good scoring chances and better play defensively have stood out last 2 games. The LA game to me was very surprising I thought LA would give them fits but vice versa. Need to keep playing somewhat like the last 3 games and the wins will pile up. Still some work to be done and some tweaking on Tre's end. As much as the D has looked good the last week we need an upgrade.
