Netherlands bounce back with Slovakia scalp
Netherlands 2-0 Slovakia

The Netherlands bounced back from Saturday's friendly defeat against Bulgaria by sweeping Slovakia aside and registering a morale-boosting victory in Rotterdam.

Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk shuffled his pack and the changes made an early impact as visiting defender Kornel Sal?ta turned into his own net after home pressure. Chances came and went for the Dutch before substitute Rafael van der Vaart wrapped it up with fifteen minutes to go. The Oranje contest their final warm-up game against Northern Ireland on Saturday before heading out for UEFA EURO 2012.

Joris Mathijsen left his coach with worries over his fitness after suffering a muscle injury against Bulgaria at the weekend, and his replacement fared little better. Wilfred Bouma clashed heads with John Heitinga just minutes in and though the PSV Eindhoven man lasted to the interval he was sent to hospital for a scan, providing more problems for Van Marwijk.

Ibrahim Afellay was handed a start and did not take long to impress. Good movement from the FC Barcelona forward opened space on the left and his teasing cross was turned in by the unfortunate Sal?ta after eight minutes.

Robin van Persie, employed in a central position after his adventure on the flank at the weekend, worked well with Afellay and Arjen Robben as Slovakia were dragged all over the field but openings were not taken.

There were more frowns among Dutch fans after the interval as Wesley Sneijder departed with a knock to his ankle, though his replacement grabbed the chance to impress. Van der Vaart first rattled the crossbar from a free-kick before rifling in a diagonal shot after fine work from fellow replacement Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Holland+Euro+2012+Home-Away+kit

I liked the old away kit from the late 80's / early 90's, they should of went for the retinas and made that sky / royal blue the base color instead of black...sexy kit non the less though.

I would not write off Italy that fast. Have you seen that friendly (3-0 loss to Russia)? Italians had a fair amount of good scoring opportunities, they just did not executed. THe result (3-0) does not really reflect what was happening on the field.

Barzagli loss is a big blow no doubt, but Italy responds to this type of adversity time and again.  The newest betting scandal in Serie A, the loss of Criscito due to that scandal are all things that can help bring the team closer together.  Much like 2006 when another betting scandal rocked the league, the players use it as a rallying point to show they can perform.  If Buffon is at the top of his game, and Chiellini is fully recovered, this team can't be counted out.  The two wildcards are Balotelli and Cassano, they could either work magic together or be a complete disaster, I guess time will tell!

Forza Azzurri!!

If anyone's interested the BBC did a pretty good program about fears of racism/anti-semitism popping up in Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012. Several players on England's team have said they won't be bringing their families out of fears of racist incidents and, in the show, Sol Campbell recommends fans don't go.

Word of warning, some of the scenes are pretty rough. A group of Indian kids getting beaten in the stands by fans of the same team is pretty sickening as is a police officer saying that an entire block of fans giving the Nazi salute were just pointing at the other team:

? Wilfred Bouma was forced off following a clash of heads with John Heitinga against Slovakia on 30/05.

? The Netherlands qualified with a game to spare after winning their opening nine matches before a 3-2 loss to Sweden.

? Defenders Mathijsen and Van der Wiel played every minute of the Netherlands' campaign.

That didn't take long. Good to see UEFA already is deep in spin mode. I'm sure any bananas thrown will be signs of The Velvet Underground's enduring Polish fan base.

Hard to imagine a Polish person making fun of somebody else...UEFA has really put themselves in a precarious position here - teams won't hesitate to pull out of the Euro if this kind of shite goes on during the actual tournament.
