FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015

USA deservedly advances in a tepid soccer game. refereeing was a factor. no red card for a professional foul by the american defender followed by an awarded penalty to america for a foul? committed outside the box. regardless the stat that summed up the game: shots on net by germany = 0

Couldn't quite believe that Germany was that bad in this game.  Shooting wide on their only penalty kick/shot, and plus the zero shots on target.  One could almost say that the Germans were paid to lose.
Great for Canada (the host country not the team) that USA advanced. A lot of Americans will be at the games.

Not even a pep talk message from the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, was enough for England  in their Semi- Final loss against Japan 2-1.

An own goal (confirmed by goal-line technology) all but gave Japan the victory.  Shoddy & questionable refereeing once again came into focus.  In the end though, all that mattered was the final score.

Japan will play the U.S.A. in the Final, while England plays Germany to determine the 3rd Place winner.

England beat Germany on a penalty kick in extra time and earn the third place finish, and their best placement result in any World Cup per se.

For England, this is the best they have ever achieved thus far and they were ecstatic with the win:

Head coach Mark Sampson: "To achieve a third-place finish in this tournament and go home as the top European nation, to finally beat Germany, it?s a really big statement for this team and something they will be remembered forever for."

Well, good for them, the Lionesses.

As for Germany, they had their chance to score early on but their free kick was stopped by the England 'keeper.
The Germans were the top nation but their tepid play against the USA in the Semi-Finals confounded many.

UEFA uses the WWC as their Olympic qualification. Unfortunately the English 3rd place result will not see a Team GB in Rio next summer. The 4 football unions could not agree on composition of a team so no team will be sent.

will be glued to the TV later today in hopes to watch a USA World Cup win.. We haven't been great in every game but been fortunate to do what is needed to advance.. Win or bust Go Merica

Congratulations to the USA, the 2015 Women's World Cup champions!

For an unprecedented third time, the US has won the Women's World Cup and with a near perfect record in this tournament, but not before routing Japan 5-2 to take the championship trophy.

What a performance from the Americans.  Carli Lloyd with three goals (and tournament MVP -- Golden Ball Award), and Hope Solo (chosen tournament's top goalkeeper -- Golden Glove Award).
The US was never in question as the Americans took charge on the field from the get-go.  It was never any doubt just who the best team was in this game and the USA proved it with aplomb over a hapless Japan.

President Obama  @POTUS
What a win for Team USA! Great game @CarliLloyd! Your country is so proud of all of you. Come visit the White House with the World Cup soon.

Well done, ladies.  Plus, not to mention the 54,000+ fans that packed B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver.  An awesome sight for a Women's World Cup Final.  Not surprising that this tournament has set new attendance records.  Well done, Canada!

As a footnote, Canadian defender Kadeisha Buchanan was named top young player of the tournament.  At least the Canadians won something of merit, other than the disappointing exit in the Quarter-Finals. Oh well....

Canada's Quarter-Final exit didn't sit too well with Canada Soccer president Victor Montagliani:

Obviously when you?re hosting an event ? it doesn?t matter what sport you?re in ? and you don?t win it or get to a final, it is a missed opportunity," said Montagliani. "I don?t think there?s any way to sugar-coat that."

"Our goal was always to be (in the final)...and also the secondary goal was to be (in the semis)...said Montagliani. "We didn?t succeed, so from a micro level it?s been a difficult pill to swallow."

"The team did get better as the tournament went on," he said. "I think we need to use this as a learning experience, not only from a World Cup perspective, but tournament play, and build on it and build upon the disappointment."

And according to Canada Soccer secretary-general Peter Montopoli:

...total tally...to have sold about 1.35 million tickets for the tournament?s 52 matches, or about 90 per cent of the goal of 1.5 million tickets. It should be noted that FIFA counts doubleheaders as two tickets.

Apart from the men?s World Cups, Montopoli said that number would make the event the most attended FIFA tournament in history.

All in all, a success!
